Make a Mac Pro always boot into 32 bit mode?
I know, it's an awkward title for a post. I've been spending the
day setting up my new MacPro Quadcore and installing drives, memory,
my new UAD-2 Solo card and software.
Is there a way to get a new MacPro to always boot in 32-bit mode?
The 2010 Mac Pros (like mine) default to 64-bit when booting. But
lo and behold, today I discovered that the UAD-2 card isn't recognized
if you're running in 64-bit mode. You have to boot into 32-bit or the card doesn't work (the UAD Control Panel just reports "No
Cards Found"). The UA website says this is a known issue, but no fix
at this time other than 32-bit boot.
I know you can boot 32-bit by holding down the "3" and the "2" keys
while starting up the Mac. Curious if there's a more "permanent"
solution.

Here
It boots into whatever kernel you choose.

Re: Make a Mac Pro always boot into 32 bit mode?
Found this by googling "terminal mac boot 32 bit mode". There are terminal commands.
To set your machine to boot into 64 bit mode enter this command and reboot:
sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture x86_64
To set your machine to boot into 32 bit mode enter this command and reboot:
sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture i386

This is for people who get a bit intimidated by the Terminal... it's the same exact thing in a GUI.bayswater wrote:Found this by googling "terminal mac boot 32 bit mode". There are terminal commands.

You don't have to do much. Highlight the command, copy, open terminal, and paste and press return.

Re: Make a Mac Pro always boot into 32 bit mode?
There's commands that have to be done in such specific formatting that simple copy paste techniques can cause problems... but on this specific command, no.bayswater wrote:You don't have to do much. Highlight the command, copy, open terminal, and paste and press return.

Open Terminal, found in your Utilities folder.
The simple way:

FYI, from the UA website, just in case you missed this:David Polich wrote:I discovered that the UAD-2 card isn't recognized

New UAD-2 plug-in: UAD SSL E Series Channel Strip
New UAD-2 plug-in: UAD SSL G Series Bus Compressor
(Mac) UAD-2 drivers are now compatible with 64-bit kernel mode
(Mac) Mac OS 10.4.x "Tiger" is no longer supported

Here's a handy little app: SixtyFourSwitcher 1.2. You can get it at Macupdate or google it.
