pls write down your solution

Post by jeepbird »

Is anyone out there still facing the stuck MIDI note problem or is it just me? I've searched everywhere in the forum, tried every suggestion I can make but the problem still persist.

Could everybody who have fixed this problem (but faced before), please write down their own solution so that I (and others) and try? Thanks!

BTW. MOTU tech, could you please fix the problem even only a small number of users are facing it?

My problem seems to become exaggerated when I have a longer piece of music with lots of information. For example, a 4-5min orchestral cue with lots of percussion, and lots of controller info causes more MIDI problems. A 30 second spot rarely causes stuck notes. However, it has seemed to have gone down with doing mac maintainence often. I use "Cocktail" (macosxcocktail.com) to repair permissions, clean caches, etc at least once a week - more often if I'm doing lots of audio. Give it a try and see how it works out.

Downloading and installing the latest MIDI driver v1.31 from MOTU's web site helped my stuck notes.

It's also been mentioned by several people to NOT connect your MIDI interface to a hub, only direct to the mac USB port. I would use the shortest USB cable I could and use a good quality one but that's just my $.02.

Probably won't help the MIDI, but OS10.3.9 cleaned up a couple of other oddnesses so I'd recommend that too since it's free.

thank you for your suggestions. I have tried them but am unlucky to find that the same problem persist. I have two friends who have the same problem. Hope we can find other possible solutions.

Any other suggestions?

thanks!

Installing MIDI driver v1.31 helped a lot but didn't totally solve the stuck note problem for me. Stuck notes still intermittently raise their ugly heads, usually in bunches. For some reason, at odd times, MIDI note offs don't get transmitted, resulting in stuck notes. Some users have reported success by changing the "work priority" setting in the Configure Hardware Driver prompt. I'm trying that now. Many have said that USB hubs are a no no, including techs at MOTU, but I've got way too many MTPs and too long cable runs in my setup to work at all without hubs. In my setup the virtual instruments stick as often as the hardware synths do so I'm not certain that the USB hubs contribute to the problem. When notes stick it can happen even in a simple one track MIDI sequence with no audio and no plugins, so the problem doesn't seem to be proportional to CPU usage. Sometimes everything works great for an hour, only to get all gummed up for the next hour...I don't get it. I'm hoping that down the road when I get a G5 it will cure the problem, but many have reported problems even with the new machines...

I'm still trying to trace my stuck notes issue. At this point it seems to be a bad second MTPAV. I'm waiting for my RMA from MOTU to send it in.

My problem occurs only on my second (networked) MTP, and occurs in both OS9/DP3.x and OSX/DP4.5x

Does any of you having the stuck MIDI problem use the "Wait" function in DP? (i.e. seq only start to play when MIDI message is received or when you press 2 <enter> in a row)

I noticed that when I turn off the "wait" function (which I nearly always use), the problem seldom appear.

I'm trying to do a research to see if this is related. Two of my friends having the same problem use the function as well.

Any input?

MOTU tech ... is it any hint on solving the problem?

In my setup the virtual instruments stick as often as the hardware synths do so I'm not certain that the USB hubs contribute to the problem.

This is interesting. I still get stuck notes with Absynth and Reaktor but always attributed that to NI as a separate issue - which it may be. But if folks are getting stuck notes with other AU VI's then there's something there bigger than NI compatibility. It also might mean that the whole stuck notes issue really goes deeper than MIDI itself.

Any thoughts?

I have other V.I.s such as RealGuitar & Ivory (from Synthogy), as well as EWQL (from N.I.) strings. They are all from different manufacturers. Real Guitar & EWQL often have stuck notes, I can't remember if Ivory has ever got the same problem.

Both hardware synth & soft synth will suffer when the problem appears.

Interestingly, last night when I turned off the "wait" function, I have a long very calm night away from the stuck note problem.

But the "wait" function, is what I've been using seen day one with Performer. It really affects my workflow a lot.
