Track Renaming Annoyance

Post by LaudMusic »

I really wish that DP would not rename the track after you add a VST. I like to setup a general template with my placeholder instruments with or without a VST assigned.

When I add an empty track and name it Violins 1, Violins 2, etc. then later when I know which sample library I want to use, it changes the track name to something generic Kontakt, etc. I don't know why the programmers did this...really shortsighted.

Although I have brought this to the attention of the support staff (and they get the rationale as to why this functionality is counterintuitive) a few years ago and they have yet to do anything about it.

Anyone else annoyed by this?

First, to be clear I assume you are talking about a VI, not a VST.

Yes, when you add an Instrument track with nothing assigned, and name it, selecting the VI the track uses changes the name to the name of the VI. I can see some confusion if your Instrument tracks are used in the more recent mode where the MIDI is part of the track.

But the older mode has independent MIDI tracks pointing the Instrument track with the VI, or to external devices. In that case, changing the VI assigned to the Instrument track does not change the name of the associated MIDI tracks. In this mode, it would make no sense to leave the Instrument track name unchanged. E.g. if you had Kontakt in the Instrument track, and changed that to MX4, it would get confusing if the Instrument track was not renamed when you are trying to assign new MIDI tracks to it - it would not be clear where the path to MX4 is.

So maybe MOTU has not made the change you suggest because they’d have to figure out what makes sense for each of the two ways Instrument tracks are used. It would probably be two different approaches, depending on which mode of Instrument track you use. And then they’d have to decide what to do if you switch modes in mid stream.
