I want to expand my 828es to 16 inputs. I'm considering the 8pre USB as an A/D converter, using the 8pre optical out to my host 828es.
I'm not sure how the 8pre receives clock/sync. Is it through the optical? As I understand it the 8pre defaults to converter mode if there is no USB control present, but I don't see how the 8pre is slaved to the 828es.
By the way my long term goal is to build an AVB-based system with 32 inputs. I have found used 8pre USBs on e-bay for about $200, this is a short term quick/dirty/cheap path to 16 channels for now.
Thanks for any input/suggestions

Re: MOTU 8pre USB
I do not have one of these, but do something similar with a Clarett OctoPre.
Looking at the 8pre USB manual, you can adjust the clock source from the front-panel (i.e., the volume dial).
