Re-edging my JBL 4410(s) again.

Here's where to talk about preamps, cables, microphones, monitors, etc.

Re-edging my JBL 4410(s) again.

Post by James Steele »

Hmmmm... maybe that's what I get for liking to crank these bad boys, but looks like it's time to replace the foam rings that attach the speaker cone to the basket again. I was playing something bad tonight and sure enough I heard a weird little "fizz" on a bass guitar track on my left monitor... and took the cover off and could see a spot on the foam ring that had broken down I guess and had a small hole in it.

I first searched for Orange County Speaker where I think I last bought a kit to fix this and they've changed the name of the business and now don't sell the kits. Found what I need at Simpler Speakers:

Oh boy... another project. It just never ends.

A little dab of silicone will fix, at least temporarily.

I hate foam surrounds. Smog Rot bites them hard.

No doubt! Well, I already ordered the kit that should come in a few days. The darn things are beasts and I don't want to pull down off their stands until I need to. Like we talked about today, though, I'm seriously thinking of retiring them and maybe selling them to some nostalgic soul so I can blow a big wad of cash on pair of THESE BAD BOYS!

I have to repress the urge. They're not cheap, but they are supposed to sound great and look sexy as can be!

I have a pair of 4412 still in the box. Long story. I still plan at some point to take over the living room and treat friends to some Beatles virgin vinyl and a good bottle of scotch.

A lot of scotch I think. I have a pair of KEF monitors — the model that were used at the BBC, bought for a perception lab. When I got them out to hear them again, it was an ear opener.
