Help With Recording Setup

Post by frankjshin »

Hello,

I have the following gear and I was wondering if I could get some help with optimal setup for recording a VI like BFD with vocals, guitars, and bass (all at once).

G4 PowerBook 1.25 with 1 GB RAM
Mac OS 10.3.8
MOTU 828
Behringer Eurorack UB 1204-PRO
DP 4.12
2 External FW drives (one for BFD, one for all other DP audio)

I can't seem to figure out how to do this effectively without dealing with major latency issues. I figure that I am doing something fundamentally wrong. I know that with the original 828 I don't have CueMix, but is there another way to do this with direct monitoring otherwise. I know the Eurorack stinks and there isn't a direct out on each channel but I wasn't sure if there was a way nonetheless.

Also, if I lower the latency enough to monitor through DP with BFD playing, the whole thing chokes. Please help.

Thanks.

try lowering buffer settings in DP configure hardware driver to 512 or 256.

I've tried that, but it crashes or pops up an error message. I was hoping for more of a routing type solution since monitoring through DP seems impossible with this setup.

I also have a SM Pro Audio PR-8 Mark 2 (8 channel Mic Pre). Doubt that adds any help to my situation, but just in case...

Go under Setup, Configure Audio System,Input Monitoring Mode and choose Direct hardware Playthrough. Doing this you shouldn't have any latency, but you won't see your levels in DP, but that's okay since when the faders are zero'd initially you'll never peek them when using your pre-amps and the lowest buffer you can handle and make sure you aren't using any effects in DP while recording.

Let me know how that goes.
