Patch Names for Roland Fantom XR
Hi all,
New user here.
Trying to set up patch names for my Fantom XR in DP, but the template they have for Roland Fantom under the MIDI Devices Bundle seems to be for another model, not the XR...
How does one go about setting custom bank select messages and patch names for a new device in DP? I used to do this in Logic but I don't see a way to do it in DP. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance for your time
David

Re: Patch Names for Roland Fantom XR
The MIDI patch list info for Windows is in C:\ProgramData\MOTU\Digital Performer\MIDI Devices. Each device has a .midnam file which defines the patches and an entry in the .middev files. Roland has a patch list generator here: http://www.rolandus.com/support/patch_script_builder/ (thanks to Gravity Jim for pointing that out a while ago). Generate the patches for DP OSX and follow the readme file except place the files in the Windows Roland folder.

Re: Patch Names for Roland Fantom XR
Tried this approach, but I wonder if the issues I found are because the Scripts are for OSX, not for Windows...
Downloaded the midname and middev files, copied it to the MIDI Devices folder in DP Program Data, but in the track window, I only get a list of patches grouped by category (i.e. "Ac. Piano", "Strings", etc. No preset lists, which would have been the most useful to me)and the drop-down menu does not allow me to scroll beyond the "Soft Lead" category, and I know there are more since there is a triangle in the bottom... Very strange behavior, but again might be because they are intended for OSX?
Thanks again.

Re: Patch Names for Roland Fantom XR
I'm not sure if this applies to your situation or not, but a few years ago after installing my current Mac, I couldn't get a few of the older external MIDI modules to correctly show their patch names. It would just show "Patch 1", "Patch 2", etc.
After placing the correct midnam and middev files in the correct folder, the author of Cherry Picker told me to go to Audio MIDI Setup and delete the modules that weren't showing the names correctly, quit both Audio MIDI and DP and maybe even a restart.
That worked.
I'll try to locate his email later with the exact steps that worked then.
Unfortunately, I have a similar issue now with a couple of vintage externals that I can't find patch lists for.
The price of progress...

Thanks for your response, Buzzy...
I do have a setup with a Mac, but I use Logic for that one, which is a bit easier in a way, in setting up custom MIDI instruments with custom bank select messages.
I am trying to learn DP 8 in a Windows 7 environment, so the issue I'm having us with DP 8 with external synths... I am trying to keep using my hardware synths rather than going all virtual, so it's like trying to patch older tech with newer one, always a learning curve!
Thanks again

The files are the same for Windows as OSX. You put them in the MIDI Devices\MOTU\Roland folder, right? And, you reselected the manufacturer and model for the device in DP MIDI bundles? I assume you did because you are seeing a different patch list.dcesarblock wrote:Tried this approach, but I wonder if the issues I found are because the Scripts are for OSX, not for Windows...

If you don't like the way the patches are generated/grouped for DP, one thing you can try is to generate the patch lists for Pro Tools. PT doesn't recognize groups gathered across patch banks so maybe the PT stuff will be straight up banks. Replace the .middev and .midnam you previously generated with the PT ones.

Re: Patch Names for Roland Fantom XR
I believe you've found a bug in displaying the patch lists. I moved my PC1XL definitions (which are rather complex) to the PC and encountered the same scrolling issue. The patch groups don't scroll past the initial display even though the down arrow is present. When I move to the down arrow, the patch list just disappears. So I would guess that the bank organization that you are looking for is there, but maybe unavailable because of the scrolling issue.

Thanks NazRat for your response, I will check to see if I can reproduce the same in my DP8 setup in my Mac, that way we would know its a Windows only problem.
