Latin Brass ensemble?

Post by Dwetmaster »

I have to arrange Brasses for this Salsa song I'm working on and I was wondering what is the typical Brass ensemble for Salsa music.

I thought about using trumpet, Trombone, Sax Alto, Sax Tenor, Sax Bari.
How much of each do you think would be appropriate?

In most cases as this, 2 trumpets, 1 trombone, 1 alto, 1 tenor, 1 bari is a nice balance.

A variation on this could be 3 trumpets, 1 or 2 trombones, 2 altos/1 tenor or 1 alto/2 tenors, and one bari. Proportions can go up from there by a factor of 1. Some salsa will omit the bari altogether while other bands will even add a second bari, depending upon their needs.

Mainly, the instrumentation is dictated by the band's personnel itself if you are writing for an established group. If your chart is for a pick-up band, almost anything goes.

Some salsa bands don't use sax at all, fwiw.
