MIDI input split/instrument combinator
I have been using DP for a few years now and started using it for live performances since last year. It is really a breeze to work with backing tracks, MIDI program changes of any sort, virtual instruments, audio fx... BUT! I usually find myself stuck when working with virtual instruments (half of my live setup is a digital piano + MIDI keyboard + synthesizer, and the other half is VSTs) because there isn't (or at least I cannot find) a way to make a combi/multi instrument by splitting the MIDI notes inside DP. I'm talking about a function similar to Ableton Live's instrument rack or Reason's combinator, where you can put more than one VST on one track and split MIDI keyboard zones inside the DAW (my MIDI controller doesn't allow multiple zones, transmits only one channel, and I'm not really a fan of splitting zones from the MIDI keyboard). So usually I just load Reason VST on one track and program everything inside its combinator.
Is there another way to do this? Or at least a way of filtering MIDI notes to specify a certain range on one MIDI/instrument track? Thank you!

Re: MIDI input split/instrument combinator
It's a good question. I was thinking you could use some kind of plugin to filter the MIDI input stream for keyranges.
Hmm. Here are some possible ideas, but I can't vouch for any of them, personally:

This set of MIDI tools is pretty old (I think) but it does have some useful MIDI filtering options, including a MIDI Key Split, and a 4-range key split.

There might be others. Some VI's will have key-ranges built into them (e.g., Kontakt)

Re: MIDI input split/instrument combinator
I understand the concern but there are keyboard controllers that do this quite well from Native Instruments and others.(my MIDI controller doesn't allow multiple zones, transmits only one channel, and I'm not really a fan of splitting zones from the MIDI keyboard)

Thank you for all the replies! I've already heard of Splitter but never tried it, I will take a look at all the options you gave me, thank you! If I find anything else that might work better for my needs I will post it here =D

Nice! ThanksMichael Canavan wrote: ↑Sun Apr 27, 2025 7:10 am A fellow DP user made an App to do just this, it's Mac OS only.
