Do you mean the spectral view of soundbites in the Sequence Editor window?

I'm not sure of the proper name for it but a list of vertical bars across the frequency spectrum.

For instance, I'm wanting to see how much 40Hz there is with the bass"

It would show a frequency curve too.

I just found one on BlueCat Audio. I think this will work for me.

MOTU's Dynamic Equalizer will show you a waveform. Not too hard to figure out which frequencies are being displayed. It does not show it as bars, however.

Many EQ plugins do show the data as bars and I know that I have some but no names come to mind. A few are inexpensive and there may be some freebies out there. I need to be somewhere else right now but I should have some time tomorrow to take a look.

The FFT in the MW EQ is turned off by default, but it works pretty well. Not super detailed, but good for general ideas.

If not, you're probably better off with the FET mentioned above than the Spectrogram view of the wave form. It tells you the frequency densities, but there is no scale to tell you the frequencies.

…string theory says that all subatomic particles of the universe are nothing but musical notes. A, B-flat, C-sharp, correspond to electrons, neutrinos, quarks, and what have you. Therefore, physics is nothing but the laws of harmony of these strings. Chemistry is nothing but the melodies we can play on these strings. The universe is a symphony of strings and the mind of God… it is cosmic music resonating through 11 dimensional hyperspace.

This is slightly off topic but get a TC Electronic Clarity. It has an RTA in addition to a ton of other cool features. No plugin needed and can monitor all the time in realtime without taking computer screen real estate.

Doesn't it need a plug in in order to send the audio to the external hardware device? I can't remember. I know they have an older version and a newer one?

You can use a plug-in but you don't have to. This is how I do it:

I use an UAD Apollo
Because I feed the main outputs 1/2 (i.e., L/R) to a monitor controller, a Drawmer MC3.1, I have the output volume on the Apollo main out to 100%.
I mirror the main outs to the S/PDIF digital outputs
I run the S/PDIF directly into the Clarity

This way I can use the clarity without the plugin. Also, I see all audio streams so if I'm on a teleconference or streaming YouTube or a streaming service or playing a movie on VLC, I can see it on the Clarity. I find this to be very informative and it helps to build a "sense" of how things "should" be loudness-wise.

That's pretty cool. Unfortunately, I'm using my only S/PDIF connections (on my MOTU 828es) to connect an old Lexicon MX200 to use for confidence reverb for vocal tracking since the built in DSP one is so bad on the MOTU interfaces. Although now I'm thinking of a possible way around it... likely wouldn't need both at the same time. I have heard whispered tales... truly ghastly rumors... about people successfully running S/PDIF through an analog patch bay. Hmmmm...
