828 (2024) issues with USB and 192Khz and line-9/10 out

Post by Rob Ainscough »

I’m having a lot of issues with my MOTU unit (running latest firmware and software):

1. 192Khz set in Win11 and I get no good audio (hit the test button) and lots of noise across first 6 out channels?
2. I run line 9-10 out to Rupert Neve Headphone AMP, when I select the output in Win11 (settings) I get no sound?
3. More testing on line 9-10 out to headphone AMP and if I turn 828 output up to max 0db I can just hear a faint sound. If I unselect 9/10 from main volume group in Cue 5 I will get “normal” sound levels … this doesn’t make sense, why would I get normal output on 9/10 when I UNSELECT main volume group?
4. Win11 permits naming of devices but Cue 5 doesn’t seem to recognize them. I can match the name by editing in Cue 5 … but it would be better if Cue 5 worked with Win11 names (just a registry value that can be read).

And finally this issue … which seems to be a connect/disconnect of my USB-C but verified the cable and plug are solidly connected (well as connected as crappy USB-C can be - what a horrible connector design):

I’m not sure why on the MacOS side of things drivers and DAWS use the correct names (don’t have to sync) and Win11 provides the same functionality but it seems none of the software developers are using Win11 available features to ID audio channels and MIDI. I’ve seen folks saying use MIDI mapper but that IS NOT a good option as that is a virtual layer and will not work with multiple MIDI devices at the same time.

In many ways I really wish USB-C was not used, USB 3.1 spec is more than capable for audio data.

Cheers, Rob.

UPDATE:

I think I solved the Cue Mix 5 and what seems to be a connect/disconnect loop. I purchased some high quality USB-C 40Gbps Thunderbolt 4/3 USB 3.2, 3.1, 2.0 cable from Cable Matters on Amazon. Just be aware the max length is 3.3 ft.

192Khz still needs some testing.

Cheers, Rob.

This USB4 cable is 2 Meters. I’ve tested it and everything works fine.

Thank you, will keep that link also.

FYI, in some setups I've had to resort to USB-C fiber optic cables as I've needed 20ft. Expensive and not always reliable.

Cheers, Rob.
