I'm anxiously awaiting what Apple might have in store with they have those new chips with the 3nm process? I think those are the smaller traces. My M1 Max Mac Studio is plenty, but my lust for more power now knowns no bounds. I'm hoping maybe in a year or two we will see another leap forward with M4, etc. and I will make one last upgrade and then make this M1 Max an absolutely overkill office machine! LOL
Pay attention to what is going on with the new USB 4.2/Thunderbolt 5 standard (to my knowledge, nothing is shipping yet). This will break the TB3/4/USB4 2800 data speed barrier for external drives but I don't know by how much. I would hope that the next Studio embraces this.

NVMe 4 x6 blades already exist that can crunch data around 7600 or so but only PCs with 6 Lane PCIe slots including the Mac Studio can handle these speeds — and internally only for now.
This sounds amazingly cool, but will that kind of speed be relevant to those of us doing audio... or more likely the sort of thing guys editing 4K (or even higher res) raw video files are going to be interested in? At a certain point, it seems like it truly is overkill for audio. I guess maybe if I was some high end mixer working with ATMOS? I'm going to be living in the stereo ghetto for some time. ATMOS totally doesn't concern me. I wish it would just go away as far as music goes. Movies? Sure. Music... humbug! Get off my lawn!

Where drive speed matters with audio is with samplers and sample libraries. It's not as linear as one would hope though, the main number that matters is 4k read since most individual samples in an orchestral library aren't going to be that big. The one we always pay attention to is the 2800MB/s which is mostly good for video. It's not perfectly linear 4k read to faster top speed for larger sample reading, but it's similar enough.

I think we all know the answer to that one.

Were Audio all I was doing, a maxed out M2 Mini Pro (32GB RAM/8TB SSD/19Core GPU/10GBE) would have suited me just fine @ $4,500. But when I found that M2 Ultra (196GB RAM/8TB SSD/60Core GPU/10GBE) and more TB4 ports under $6K in the Refurb Store... Well, I just had to, ya know?

Brother... I don't blame you one bit! I was even looking at a M1 Ultra in the refurb store earlier today but it only had a 1TB internal SSD and I know that wouldn't work for me.
