The Land of the Realtime Bounce!

Post by James Steele »

Well, I wanted to get analog gear. I blame myself!

Not complaining, but remember how having a UAD-2 card or Satellite means you can bounce very much faster than real time? Well, adding some outboard gear via the Hardware Insert Plugin means every mixdown will be in realtime. And not really a "bounce to disk"... it's having a stereo audio track setup in the project and bussing everything to that track and then recording in realtime.

I don't mine. I won't give up my analog gear anytime soon. But yeah... if I want to use my AudioScape buss comp on my mix buss, that's just how it goes. Feels old school!

It really depends on your situation, but you may want to print those tracks going through the outboard gear. I do that a lot, particularly if I'm happy with the outboard settings early on in the mix process.

True enough. And that's fine for when I'm compressing a lead vocal track... despite how cumbersome DP's printing facility is. But still no way around it if I'm going to use my analog buss compressor on my main stereo buss. "Printing tracks" in that case is a Mixdown. No way around that.

Understood. Well, if it's any consolation I rarely use bounce to disk. I got used to real time bounce in the days when BTD wasn't ready for prime time (some say it still isn't) and I like the idea of one final listen as it's printed. YMMV.

How's the hardware insert thing working for you? Have they gotten all the bugs out yet? I haven't tried it in a while.

Oh I hear you on that... it still used to make me nervous. I have enough time to do the realtime thing. It's worth it for me, though. The AudioScape Buss Comp, which is their clone of the SSL G Series Buss Compressor does a subtle but worthwhile thing to the stereo mix, so I'll keep doing it. :)

No there are still bugs. It works, but not without having to futz around with it. At least the inputs and outputs retain connection when you close and reopen a project. However move the Hardware Insert Plugin (HIP) to a different insert... it loses the connection and you need to select and reselect inputs and outputs. Also, when you re-open a project, if. you have high latency plugins on the Master Fader, any individual tracks with HIP on them will play out of time (actually late). My theory is these tracks are not being slid forward in time like the others to compensate for the latency on the Master Fader. The user is required to open every HIP and re-enter the sample offset value.

So no... it doesn't yet work very well and my multiple detailed reports and also suggestions have been met with absolute silence by MOTU. I've heard rumor that to fix these issues would require a major rewrite of the audio engine. I hope that's not true. Personally, I have become very discouraged by this aspect of DP as well as Eucon support, and don't hold out much hope.
