Two CCs showing up on one Edit Layer

For some reason I'm getting two CC lines on the same MIDI Edit layer on tracks intermittently. View Only Active Layer is enabled. Anyone else seeing this? I thought I might have enabled MPE inadvertently, but no. Is there some pref I don't know about, or is this a bug?

Is there more than one MIDI channel recorded on the track?

One channel only. Both CC lines affect the MIDI on the channel.

I reported this bug months ago to MOTU, and also here. Several DP releases since, but no fix yet.

If you record a MIDI track from any input channel other than channel 1 you will get this problem, and there may be other causes as well. And it isn't just a ghost CC, it really will "fight" the other one if you try to edit it with the pencil tool, etc.

The workaround is to select the MIDI track and export it as a MIDI file. Then go get the export, drag it into the Tracks Overview. Turn off or delete the old track. The new track will behave normally. The export "strips off" the thing causing the problem, apparently.

Yep. I can now see that If my controller is set to output from any MIDI channel other than the one the the original CC performance was created with, I get additional CC lines in the track.

Thanks Killa. Now that I know what causes it I can at least try to avoid it. Also, your MIDI file export fix works well. ...MIDI Capturing the track does not btw. I tried that.

Thanks again!

But with the newest version of DP, this workaround no longer works. It used to "strip off" the thing causing the issue, but that must have been an oversight on MOTU's part, and they've now broken it completely. I've had a support ticket for this for months, which they abandoned. I'm assuming it has to do with the MPE functionality. I don't use MPE, I don't even know its purpose, really.. but it's clear that they are sticking with it.

So I set about trying to find out the underlying cause. If you record from a MIDI source that is anything but channel 1, no matter what channel you then assign it to, it will remain the channel you recorded from. If you open up the event list for the track, you can confirm this.

The true workaround was staring me in the face the whole time, and even MOTU didn't know, or bother to tell me.

Select the whole track or multiple tracks (all events), go to the Region menu, and select "Change MIDI Channel." Change it to channel 1. In the MIDI editor, make sure you have "show only" selected for the cc you're editing. Everything then works the way it should.
