Connecting M2 to 2013 Mac Pro

Post by lydian91 »

I’m currently “in between” interfaces. My current interface that I’ve used for the last decade will not be supported on Big Sur, but with Apple Silicon on the horizon, I’m not interested in making a big interface upgrade yet. So I need something to tie me over for a bit.

The M2/M4 line looks perfect, but I would ideally like to plug it in via Thunderbolt 2 port. My USB ports are in criminally short supply, but I have plenty of T2 ports available. The Apple T3 to T2 adapter does not appear to support what I want to do here. Is there another way?

You can't.

A powered USB hub will work. You will need to find one that supplies enough power. I have an ANKER that supplies 15W to each of 3 charging ports which is more than enough. I don't know if a 5W charging port works — I no longer use a 5W charging hub.

The only problem I've found is the occasional need to unplug and reconnect when connecting via a hub. Connecting directly doesn't have this issue. I have yet to find a USB hub where this is never an issue.
