Composer Michael Giacchino, a long-time Digital Performer user, won the Oscar for Best Original Score for the Pixar movie "Up." It's not the first time we've seen DP at work in Pixar films. On some of the behind-the-scenes documentaries accompanying their films on the DVDs, one can see DP when they get around to the music side of things.
I just thought that some of our members might find it encouraging, and others might find it... er... surprising.

Well, I'll am not at liberty to say WHO it is, but there is a member of this forum who was nominated for BEST SCORE this year! Hopefully he will come forward and accept our congrats, but I won't blow the whistle - just toot his horn a little.
So for now, an anon CONGRATS DUDE! I play for the luncheon every year and they always say the true award is simply being nominated and that is certainly true. BTW, I think Michael G. should have won for Ratatouille and his award is certainly well deserved.
As for our shy guy: C'mon, let us buy you a virtual drink!!!
I'm shyly guessing it's me (Buck Sanders)?. I'm a die hard DP guy. As is Marco. We share the same rig actually! Sort of like tag team wrestling. This board is a daily read for me and has solved many problems and given tons of great tips. It's saved our ass many times.
We did the whole Hurt Locker score in DP. All the recording and processing of instruments, blending of some of the film's sound effects as well as the final mix of the score all in DP. It was the first time we didn't use Pro Tools at all except to dump a mix into for the dub stage.
We were shocked and very honored that such a subdued score would be recognized and it was awesome to be on the Hurt Locker love train. Also very happy for Giacchino. Richly deserved. I knew after seeing that opening montage in Up that he had the Oscar this time. Very cool guy too. All the composers got to sit next to each other for the awards show which was a lot of fun. I thought he gave a great acceptance speech. And how about that dance piece?

Congrats Buck! Hurt Locker has only just come out in Australia so will be sure to check it out.
BTW, I know that Alexandre Desplat is a DP user also. So that's one more. And I'm sure once those beginners Zimmer and Horner realise that the real pros use DP, they'll switch also

Cool. Just goes to show it's the artist not the tool (to those who say only Pro Tools or Logic, or maybe Cubase, can produce professional results). But of course I'm sure using DP helped get the job done faster, and hence contributed to the success.

I am just a novice with DP compared to most of you guys, and I think it is awesome that I am able to converse with such talents and expert DP users. Never before has it been this easy to communicate with people that know so much about music and Recording to gleen knowledge ( and I have many , many times)
Thank you James for keeping this forum going.
PS. I was listening to Hans Zimmer on an interview on XM radio and I agree. He is good, but one day he too will realize what he could do with DP. He needs to take notice of the future, and be a part of it

DP is the "axe" for the writing and sound design stages but usually mixing in pro tools when we have bigger recording dates that go outside our current studio. As budgets for scores have been getting tighter we're figuring out more creative means to figure out our sonic palettes beyond orchestral approaches. The past few years have had more chamber type groups or with more tracking than we'd normally like to do. We have now had a few gigs that have remained within the DP world and I have to say we've been very happy doing that. Nothing against Pro Tools or working with bigger bands but it's been a fun challenge.
