VST Wrapper question

Post by geozero »

I searched the forum and did not see this addressed:

I want to use my VST plugins (have a huge collection) in DP 4.52, so should I be looking at VST-RTAS or VST-AU wrappers? What's the difference?

I know od Audioease and FxPansion, and I liked the way FX explained the VST-AU.

But is there one better than the other? I do want to use the many presets available in VST effects.

well, if you want multiple outs - you need vst to mas wrapper by audio ease... BUT

you will find plenty of concerns and posts by me regarding such use within DP 4.52

ie Native Instruments does not play friendly with the wrapper

So the question still stands... which is better?

VST - AU

or

VST - RTAS?

DP recomends audio ease... and i couldn't give you a specific technical reason, but it sounds like you should go VST to AU... something about AU, Apple, DP, etc that makes sense...

anyone have any ideas to support my crazy theory? lol

There's nothing to compare. RTAS is a ProTools format and is not compatible with DP.

it depends on the special VI or Effect, if VSTWrapper "likes" the file, use the Wrapper, if VSTWrapper doesn't like the file, convert it with the VST to AU Converter and use it as AU.

The question is not VST-RTAS or VST-AU, the question is VST-MAS or VST-AU.

The answer is unequivocally VST-MAS, unless the particular plug for some reason does not work inside the Audioease VST-MAS wrapper, in which case you can try a VST-AU wrapper (the only one I can think of is the one by fxpansion, yes?)

AU is a limited format inside DP (no mutli-outs, plus some other limitations), mostly because it seems that MOTU 'wraps' AUs into the MAS environment (via the MAS-AU bundle). So it makes a lot more sense to wrap VST into MAS.

I just bought mine, so far it plays well with NI, gives me multi-outs on all my multitimbral plugs (which their AU versions obviously did not,and it completely stabilized Atmosphere, which had been very temperamental since DP4.5x

Good to hear it's working for you. I was strongly considering purchasing the AudioEase wrapper for use with NI's Battery 2, but I wanted to make sure the wrapper would provide multi-outputs to DP's busses before I did so.

It does, but in all the ones I tested it does not give you the total freedom like, ie, MachFive does, where you can set any output to be anything at all.

It seems the VST wrapper allocates for all possible outputs busses in numerical order. You can then shift the whole enchillada up or down. So, if your VI has 8 add'l outputs, it allocates bus 1-8; you can then change that to, say, bus 3-10, but not 1,2,7,8,11,12,15,16, for instance. That's as far as I can tell up to now.

Hmmm, interesting. Is it possible just to set up simple stereo bus configurations, like routing a cell in Battery to DP's bus 1-2, a different cell to bus 3-4, another to 5-6, etc.? That's all I would really need it for, just to route different cells to their own stereo tracks in DP.

Try repairing permissions. Don't fear, it works, and the company's tech support is great.

I re-read your original post. That huge collection of VST plugs aren't from OS9, are they? Because they can't be made to work in OSX.
