Good "grounding," but somewhat dated in terms of contemporary techniques. Plus you have to evaluate the samples made with the GPO. <sigh>

An AMAZING Instrumentation/Orchestration book I would very highly recommend is Dr. Norman del Mar's Anatomy of the Orchestra.

It's probably not the most "famous" book in the topic, but it's approach is different, it was written relatively not that long ago. One of the things I like about this particular book is that a lot of the text is from the direct instrumentalist POV.

Very cool.

The only thing that is trully missing is a set of accompanying CDs for the examples... like the Adler... But still a great read/study.
