Consolidated windows: how do I "unhook" the Tr

Post by gavspen »

So I'm trying to get into the consolidated windows thing, I use the command in the Windows menu "Pop Into Consolidated Window", and up comes that one with all the tabs "Tracks, Sequence, Drum etc.," at the top right. Looks useful until I see that when you flip to the "Mixer" window, only tracks which are highlighted in the "Tracks" window will show up there.

In other words, let's say you are in the "Mixer" window, with all faders visible, and you flip back to the "Tracks" window. While there you highlight just one track, to do some edit let's say, and now when you go back to the "Mixer" window, only that track will be showing. So in the "Mixer" window ya now gotta open up the "Tracks List" (which also disappears when I flip) and then highlight all tracks to get them back. This is just an extra little annoyance which doesnt happen when you simply have them as two separate windows and click between them.

The question is, then (finally, I hear you say); how do you disconnect these two when in "consolidated" mode so they behave the way they do when they are two separate windows? MOTU says it doesnt work that way, but that seems dopey, and I'm willing to bet that some genius here has figured it out ;-)

What stupidly obvious thing am I overlooking?

You use the save board layout command to save the mixing board how you like it, then when you jump to the tracks window and then back to the mixing board you load the board layout you just saved from the mini menu.

I guess, but it's still an extra step, and one could also use "Load Board Layout>Show Everything". I just want it to be there, the way I left it, the way it is when they are separate windows. Is there really no way?

There is a preference to turn this off. Sorry I don't remember what it is.

Honestly, I have mixed feelings about the consolidated windows feature. I use a 21" monitor - which is quite a bit of workspace - but I still feel you have to "mouse around" too much to see what you want in CW mode. What I've started to do is pop out the mixer and SE windows (using the arrow pointing northeast in the each CW window bar) and leave the CW window open with Tracks Overview in the large window, and Audio Performance, Undo History, Markers and Soundbites in the sidebars. Then I just make sure part of each window is "hanging out" so no matter what window I'm in each window is immediately accessible - and the mixer doesn't update to my selected tracks!

Where man, WHERE! ;) I've looked all over for the damn thing (and MOTU tells me there isnt one, by the way) and I'll be forever in your debt if you clue me in.

I hate the consolidated window thing- everytime i want to do something, like look at a MIDI event, it always gets attached to one window or another n am forever separating these things-

Gavspen!
I think that is in the mini menu from the consolidate window.
Uncheck the option "scroll mixing board to selection"
Hope that helps.

You can disable the CW entirely in the Preferences. I played with it for a while and found it to be really cumbersome. I've already got custom keys set up to bring up whatever window I want, and the graphics run faster outside of it anyway.

Well, essentially I've done away with it as well, but I do like being able to see many of the smaller windows at once in the sidebars. I essentially do use it as a glorified Tracks Overview window.

Grigri is correct. The "scroll mixing board to selection" mode needs to be disabled. I thing it was included in the update notes of 4.5. I can't believe MOTU told you there was no way to disable it. That just shows how much their techs know.

Nice try (no I mean it, I'm grateful to any who reply :) ) but this option is already unchecked and it doesnt behave as I want. Maybe I'm not explaining myself well enough, but it's late and I've got brain freeze.

Perhaps, as if by magic, when I wake up all will be well.....and, ahem, perhaps not, at which time will try to make myself clear.

Try this;

Control/Optin-R. See the mixer on the left? Provided ypu have CHECKED Scroll The Mixing Borad To Selection in preferences, when you select a track in Tracks/Sequence etc., the mixer scrolls with it. Now you want just the mixer? Then do Contrl/Option-M. Voila! All your faders, provided you have them all selected to be shown...More edits?....Contrlol/Option-R..Right back where you were before. Don't need the Tracks window? Click the tab for the one you want....These are just some of the commands MOTU put in to get going with the CW. You can make up your own if you like...

I think the CW is is the absolute FREAKIN' BOMB!!

All interesting and I thank you, but....this is sorta the point. I'm looking for a way that doesnt require me to make selections in the tracks window to have stuff show up in the mixer window. I just want it to be there, the way I left it.

There is no way, it seems, other than to separate out the windows and click between them. So be it.
