Connecting an 8Pre (Firewire) to an older MOTU 1224

Post by tdunst »

Is it possible to slave the 8Pre to the MOTU 1224 using an AES/EBU to S/PDIF converter like the Hosa ODL312 (http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ODL312/)? I have become (painfully) aware that you cannot (apparently) run the PCI (324/424) interfaces at the same time as the MOTU Firewire interfaces, making it impossible for me to use my twin MOTU 1224s at the same time as my newer 8Pre interface. If anyone could show me a way to make this happen I would be very grateful!

No. That won't work but here's what will (and it won't cost any more):

Find a 2408 expansion module (no PCI card) and use it to take the ADAT out from the 8pre into your computer. A MkI will work just fine if you have a 324 or 424 card - I see these all the time for $100 now. That same 2408 can be used to add 8 more line inputs to your system while still letting you use the 8pre for 8 mic inputs.

If you have a 424 card, a 2408 MkII or MkIII would allow you 4 channels of 96KHz from your 8pre.

If you don't have a 424 card, perhaps you should look into getting a 2408 MkII or MkIII withe the correct (PCIx) card for your Mac. The newer versions of CueMix work with 424 cards only. Your 1224s will work with the newer card.

If you have a 324 card, the first version of the 424 card will work for you - those are fairly inexpensive used or with a 2408 MkII.
