channel assignments reassiging themselves when project is opened

I have two separate but somewhat related odd behaviors occurring...
First one) I set up a 32 track recording session. I will have say, 24 simultaneous tracks assigned to specific inputs of my interfaces- ADAT channels 8 through 32 for example- I track the rhythm section, save and close the project. Upon reopening the project I find that most of the channels have reassigned themselves randomly to any of the 96 available channels in my rig. This requires me to go through 50 odd percent of the 32 channels and reassign them to the correct inputs before proceeding.
Second one) On a vocal tracking session I assign the mic to say, channel 5. The signal is showing on channel 5 of my Apogee AD-16X converters, and channel 5 of the MOTU 2408 MKIII meters, yet in the DP11 software, no signal is present. Instead the signal is on a different channel- say channel 3 analog. As a workaround, I can change the input over to that channel in DP and continue the session. In all my decades of using Digital Performer (starting in DP2.?), I have never encountered this. Needless to say this is quite disconcerting.
Oddly enough, I can open up another project and everything is fine with none of these anomalies. This leads me to believe the problem is in the DAW software.
I have checked and rechecked my labeling in channel naming. They are all properly named.
Is there some hidden function in the DP11 software that can reassign channels? As I said, according to the meters on the Apogee AD-16X's and the MOTU 2408 MKIII's, the signal(s) are present on the correct channel(s)
