Audio dropout

Going crazy here.
Setting up an M1 Ultra 128 gig of ram running the latest os also using a presonus 1824c as my breakout box, have installed the latest drivers.
If I deny microphone access to DP then everything runs smoothly.
If I give DP microphone access so I can record guitar and my hardware synths then I get random audio dropouts, including listening to Spotify.
We’ve found it’s worse if I plug the presonus into the thunderbolt inputs in the back of the Mac, it’s better plugged into the usb c port on the front.
Help……

Could you be getting some sort of feedback in the mic signal path?

Hi Bayswater, I have no idea and wouldn’t really know how to test or check that out.
Could you elaborate on your idea?
It’s not actually a microphone it’s the Apple microphone assist thing, it appears as an orange icon on the top of the screen on the right.

If it's not a real mic, then unlikely there is any feedback. But the idea is that the digital output signal from a mic is looping back into the path -- the output and input would be the same.

M1 Ultra DP user here… different hardware though. Mic enabled is no problemma for me with my Thunderbolt connected 828es.
