Automatic Conversions on Bounce DP10

I used DP decades ago, so it's like I'm starting from scratch - I have some old projects I'm trying to do some recovery on. Some of them are (multichannel audio mix to) stereo only - 24/48 - which I would like to output/bounce as 16/44.1 WAV and MP3 files.

Simple enough but I get peppered with warning dialogs if I try to change the project sample rate and bit depth (red circle)
Am I changing it in the wrong place?

The second I use the suggested Automatic Conversions preference - the sound stops. No output.

One thing that works (I found online) involves converting the individual soundbites (each audio file), then reassign those to tracks - in order to achieve that one simple output conversion thing. It seems strange and cumbersome - especially considering I can real time convert bounced outputs to anything I want right in the bounce window in Logic. (Sorry I said the L word)

It seems so simple but it's not - to me in my preschool level of experience in DP10. Any ideas?

Converting on BTD can be a very slow process. I highly recommend batch converting your files post-bounce—much faster than bouncing and converting simultaneously in DP

QuickTime can do this free; I use TwistedWave for this—a bit more than many like to pay but it will process hours worth of files in a couple minutes or less. It has a lot of other functionality that I find most useful.

It's easy to convert an entire project's worth of files in DP without those errors if that's what you want to do — much faster than BTD. I can post screen shots when I get back to my Mac. Since 48/24 is the standard for AV, I don't recommend that. When mastering a CD, I let DSP-Quattro make the conversion of the 2-track to 44.1/16 and add dither.

Thanks so much for the reply! Of course I wasn't thinking of the obvious - convert AFTER a 48/24 bounce option!
The process I was trying is much simpler and transparent in Logic, so based on that I thought DP might be similar.

I have the bounced file conversion covered across a few software options.
I totally agree the DP conversions are quite slow, but if I want to convert the SD2 track files to WAV for mixing I have to go back to v10.3 in Logic (for some odd reason it no longer works in the newer versions) - or convert individually in DP.

Thanks again.

Well, Mike, I'd much like to know the way. I'm gonna have some use for this in near future.

Here you go.

Open a DP Project and go to the Soundbites tab. Click-drag the next to left panel to the Left.

1) Change the top tab to Soundbites—this reveals all of them. This file has tracks imported from other studios than mine — scrolling down will reveal some at 44.1. You will note that these have multiple bit depths. 16bit severely limits my headroom and I want everything in 48k. So...

2) Click on the top soundbite under NAME and drag all the way to the bottom to select them all.

3) Right-click anywhere to reveal the next window and select Convert Audio File...

Change to the Sample Rate and Format. These are the settings I use. I find that 32bit gives me much greater headroom for processing.

Note that this has nothing to do with Bounce to Disk. I always bounce to 48/24. This is the preferred format for AV unless 96/24 is specified by the client. Although internal processing is 32bit float, there's no reason to bounce to it. Some AV apps crash with 32bit float audio as they have to convert it on rendering.

I could bounce to 44.1/16 if I know that the only destination is a CD but that hasn't been the case in years. CD is just one of many ways to release nowadays and all mastering apps handle that conversion seamlessly as well as incorporate metadata. Apple no longer has its own mastering app but there are many out there. I could use Toast but find DSP-Q to be reasonably priced and more intuitive.

Neither QuickTime nor TwistedWave have the tools for commercial CD mastering.

Again, I never, ever bounce to mp3 in DP. The last time I did, a 2 hour live show took 45 minutes to bounce, DP 9.52, IIRC. That same file took just over 1 minute in TwistedWave.

Agreed… Bouncing to Disk in the project format is always the way to go.

I use (free) XLD for file conversion. It’s super-fast and dead easy.

Get it here.

A related oddity - I found a couple of old projects that wouldn't play when opened, as the project audio was set to 44.1, while the actual audio was 48. With no interface connected (just working on files) DP wouldn't allow me to change the project audio to match. But if I connected an interface (SSL2+ in this case), it was simple to correct. I guess it needed a hardware reference. Strange.

Thanks Mike. You do bring light on this. It will save my time and avoid some head-scratching.

DP will allow you to make those changes following the instructions that I posted.

Likewise, BTD will but there were a few builds of DP 10 where it was quite difficult due to a bug.

DP 10 had some bugs that were not resolved till 11.
