New Audio Support in Windows

Post by bayswater »

A saw an article about changes in Windows to better support audio and MIDI. Wondering what the Windows user here think about it. I’m always looking at the alternatives.

I'm not a Windows user, but this seems long overdue? Of course, now that Apple Silicon is gathering momentum and I'm seeing lots of Windows users moving over to the Mac for music (many YouTube "influencers" among them) I wonder if it's too little too late?

1) It's about time

2) Too little, too late

3) The market will determine which of the above is correct

I remember when my Mac Plus got MIDI and GM sounds (1987–88?). I'd bought it to run my auto parts warehouse with FileMaker+ and now I could do music with it? That was huge.

Maybe both are correct?

AS ARM put Mac far ahead in the performance arena. If PCs can up performance while still keeping a strong price advantage, maybe next time around we'll see a migration back to PCs. I was Mac to PC on price-performance. Then last laptop purchase, PC to Mac on performance. Given performance is equalized, my next purchase will be price driven. There's a lot of OS agnostics out there. As long as Logic is not your DAW of choice you're pretty much covered.

I'm interested because I'm getting tired of macOS telling me what I can and can't do with my own computer, and making me do back flips to do things that were one click on my Atari Falcon (which had built in MIDI and Audio a billion years ago). And endless options that keep popping up like the toaster on Red Dwarf.

I won't get into my rant on iOS.

If there was a "simple/high risk" pref in macOS 14/15, I'd go for it. I only need two things: pick something by clicking on it once, open something by clicking on it twice.

Exactly. Although I'm so dependent on AU and AU-level captures of my project settings, it's a bit intimidating to think of how long the migration will take me, but I decided a couple of years ago that I am done with everything Apple, as soon as I can.

I am thus very interested in how well Windows handles this mov e.

Despite frustration with Apple, I haven’t concluded yet that Microsoft is any better.
