curious about remote controllers/apps

Post by beautypill »

I am about to do a session of self-recording vocals next week.

Can anyone tell me about their favorite iPhone/iPad apps or controller devices for recording remote (i.e. controlling basic stop/start/record functions?)

I used to use DP Control back in the day, but it disappeared.

Lemmeknow what you use!

Thanks!

How are people recording themselves as performers?

Do you keep the computer near you?

Do you run back and forth to hit the space bar?

Am I alone in facing this problem?

Look up Avid Control on the iPad or iPhone App Store. It works really well. You just have TJ add it as a Eucon Control surface in DP’s control surface setup. You also have to install EuControl on your Mac.

My work station has my computer keyboard and a foot pedal within easy reach, so punch in and out can be finger- or foot-activated. The computer sits in a machine closet, out of sight and out of earshot (although the Mac Studio makes virtually no sound.). I can also start and stop recording from my Arturia keyboard controller and Faderport. A mic on a boom arm is also on hand, ready to roll on a moment's notice.

For recording myself, I have an iPad attachment on my mic stand, and I run this app:

…string theory says that all subatomic particles of the universe are nothing but musical notes. A, B-flat, C-sharp, correspond to electrons, neutrinos, quarks, and what have you. Therefore, physics is nothing but the laws of harmony of these strings. Chemistry is nothing but the melodies we can play on these strings. The universe is a symphony of strings and the mind of God… it is cosmic music resonating through 11 dimensional hyperspace.

You can set up any MIDI notes or CC#/value to do things play
play/stop toggle
record
return to zero
rewind
select which track is in record

I suppose if you already have a wireless bluetooth qwerty keyboard you'd be fine, or a longer USB cable?
or a bluetooth MIDI keyboard or a long MIDI cable?

I was looking at a wireless MIDI thing like the Lekato bluetooth MIDI thingy:

Of course, the above apps are good options.

Not to shill for Avid here, but has anybody else actually tried Avid Control in DP?

Not only do you have control of transport and mixer and arming tracks and all the rest of it, you can configure virtually unlimited soft keys which you can use to send any DP shortcut key or trigger keyboard macros. You also can edit plug in parameters... and a lot of other stuff. Pretty sure you could even add a plugin to a track, but MOTU's Eucon support needs improvement before that's practical. It's probably more powerful than any other iPhone/iPad solution and oh yes... it's FREE.

I tried to try it a long time ago. But somewhere in the process Avid asked for my iLok and password. I have a lot of things on the iLok, and no one else has asked for the password. I can see why they need an ID to post the licence, but clearly they don't need the password. At that point I bailed.

I vaguely remember that. Wonder if that’s still the case. I can’t imagine what sort of nefarious thing Avid might do. I don’t believe I’ve ever provided a password to them. Don’t think you need an iLok license to use EUCON or download the installer.

It was Avid Control I tried. I had to create and account and provide the password. I had tried at another time to get the free version of PT, and the same thing happened.

I don’t suppose Avid is out to do anything, but someone who hacks Avid might. Generally, providing passwords to third parties is not a good idea and the fact they would ask for it makes me wonder about their approach to security.

Well since I already have an Avid account, it's too much trouble for me to try to create a new one right now to verify if that's still the case that they ask for your password. It's strange. They'd be the first company I know of to do that. I have a perpetual Pro Tools Studio license I have to renew yearly (for support)... don't think I've ever had to give up my iLok password.

Anyway... I remembered David Das posted a video about a year ago about Avid Control and using it with DP and what you needed to do to install so maybe he covers that:

For what it's worth, I just now went through the hassle of creating a new account at Avid (which *is* required to access the Download area) and was able to find Eucon downloads here: https://my.avid.com/esd/Product/Information/113

It appears it will let me download the Installer for Eucon without needing to provide my iLok username and password. I also ran iLok License Manager just now and there's no license on my iLok for using EuControl so it doesn't require an iLok license to run. So I'm sort of confused as to where in the process you were *required* to give your iLok username and password? From what I can tell it is not necessary to provide your iLok username and password to download Avid Control for iPad/iOS or the EuControl software from the Avid site.

I wan't to clear this up so that people aren't dissuaded from employing what is a very useful tool because of incorrect information.
