Cursor Hand Goes Missing

Has anyone had this issue:

The cursor hand that pops up when dragging MIDI notes or dragging WAVs longer or shorter randomly goes missing. I can still see the arrow and the plus, but the little hand that should pop up when making MIDI or WAVs longer or shorter just goes away. I've tried toggling the Pointer Tool, the I-Beam Tool, and the Pencil Tool, but nothing seems to get the little hand back once it's gone other than quitting DP and restarting, and even that sometimes doesn't do the trick. Anyone experience this, and if so, how did you fix it?

I had that happen yesterday. Rebooting my Mac made it come back.

This sounds similar to my situation. All tools stop appearing after a few minutes of working in DP. The tool behavior is there, but I only see a generic pointer. Restarting brings them back usually, but it happens so often I don’t even bother at this point. I’ve actually learned to work without seeing pallet tools or smart tools.

Needless to say, this is a major PIA and really slows me down. I’ve tried everything I can think of to fix it. Tech-support is stumped, as are many of the wise people on this forum. Your issue sounds very similar. Please let me know if you find a solution. I’d love to be able to see the tools again :(

I get the occasional stuck tool, but a little moving around seems to quickly restore normal performance.

So strange how different, yet similar, systems demonstrate such disparate flaws.

I've been experiencing some cursor weirdness, since going to v11.3, as well.

Specifically, the cursor stops changing to the little bracket icons when trimming audio in the Sequence Editor. Sometimes, clicking off of DP (like on the Finder desktop) and then coming back to DP fixes it.

Clicking off DP into the Finder or another app has no effect on my issue. The tools will come back randomly sometimes, but I can't figure out why.

I did notice yesterday that I can always invoke the Cursor tool, even when no other tools are showing up. The little arrows you get when resizing windows also are immune to the problem. ...maybe because the pointer, the cursor and the resizing arrows' icons are part of the MacOS system, and not installed by DP, they are unaffected? The little arrows for resizing tracks in the SE do disappear however - which is arguably the most disruptive aspect of this problem. not having those makes life very difficult :(

Yet another AS problem? Not happening here.

I’m sure it’s not. Until the OP posted I thought I was the only one that had the problem. And I still may be the only user for whom it happens consistently.

Yes, I’m on an AS Mac, but since it’s such an isolated issue, categorizing it as an “AS problem” wouldn’t be accurate

Agreed. I've seen it exactly once. Because of my paralyzed left arm, making accidental key combinations is a normal part of my workflow. I have no idea if I caused that one incident or not.

I think 11.32 fixed this issue for me! I don't think my tool icons have disappeared once since updating. Fingers crossed it sticks. It really speeds things up being able to see the tools.

I had hoped for me too, but sadly the little hand icon disappeared today. Booo! The only fix that seems to work for me is to quit DP and re-open the set. And, to be clear, it happens on all my sets, not just specific to one. I can't seem to find anything I'm doing that would make it occur. A set of key combinations? A particular edit. Maybe someone else can offer some insight that they've found.

Gah! I spoke too soon. It just returned for me too. Booo indeed! As far as I can tell it's just you and me that are experiencing this issue continuously, Aaron. I've tried everything I can think of and can't figure out what makes it occur or what makes it go away. Quitting DP usually fixes it for me too, but on large projects with long load times I usually just live without tool icons. It sucks

The tools didn't disappear in a new User Account that I set up, but I only did a test project for a few hours. I can't be entirely sure it would stay fixed even if I spent the time to migrate to a new account. Learning to work without tools is easier than setting up an entirely new account for me, so for the time being that's what I'm doing.

If you haven't already please report to MOTU. With two users experiencing the issue maybe MOTU can triangulate on a solution.

Here's a quick fix I just discovered: When the issue arises, right click anywhere in the Transport and deselect "Editor Tools" from the pop up menu. Then right click again anywhere in the Transport and select "Editor Tools." That works for me so far.

Wow. That's an amazingly obscure, yet simple fix procedure you stumbled on! Sometimes I don't see the issue for days, but I'll try this next time I do. Fingers crossed it works for me too - I'm actually looking forward to it happening again now!

Thanks!

OMG, this works Aaron! It's slightly more complicated for me since I don't normally keep my Transport in the Consolidated Window, but once I put it in the CW and toggled Editor Tools, as you suggested, the tools came back!

I can't see why this fix would stop working so thank you very much for sniffing out this workaround - since I don't keep the Transport in the CW I'd have never found it! I'll follow up on my MOTU Tech-note with this workaround. With this info maybe they can eliminate the issue entirely in a future update, but for now I'm good (or a lot better than I was).

Thanks again!
