Wow. That's a smart idea.
It's interesting how the question of "thermals" never came up for me before, but now that I'm doing more recording near the machine, I get why I don't want that fan coming on. With that form, I wonder how/if/when the fans will come on during open mic tracking.

That picture has been around for about a year and a half as have the rumors of a mini-pro or something like it. It will be interesting to see if something like it gets built but I could get interested. More interesting would be an M1 Max based Mini with 8TB storage onboard but I’m not holding my breath.
I’m aboard for the first M series desktop Mac that meets my requirements. Although I’m not in a big hurry, the resale value on my iMac Pro will diminish big time as soon as such replacements are available.

Yea, I was concerned about doing so much work 2’ away from my iMac Pro. As it turned out, the fans are whisper quiet and never rise above idle except during MacOS updates so I no longer give it a thought. If the next Macs are as quiet, it won’t be an issue — or nothing you can’t get around with a plug like RX that can ‘learn’ the noise and create a filter (never had to on this but I did own a G5).It's interesting how the question of "thermals" never came up for me before, but now that I'm doing more recording near the machine, I get why I don't want that fan coming on. I want something bigger than that frankly. Preferably with PCI slots and 4 spinner-drive bays.
Might be hoping for too much I s'pose; it'll just save me extra expenditure is all.
Also, I'm hoping for more than just a beefed-up Mac Mini power-wise, using AS and way-cheaper than the 2019 MP.

With the noise that spinners make, I want mine in a different room or a closet via 10G Ethernet. I’m looking at some new 10GBe boxes but the price point isn’t where I like.monkey man wrote: ↑Sun Mar 06, 2022 6:06 pm I want something bigger than that frankly. Otherwise, there’s no reason a box of that size can’t hold 4 PCIe slots. A lot of the space in the current MP 7.1 is dedicated to those optional twin Dual-GPUs (not a typo) and Afterburner. The M1 Max built-in GPU compares favorably using a whole lot less space and generating far less heat at a much lower price. Since I’m not doing major studio animation, that kind of GPU horsepower is waaaaaaay overkill for me anyway. For those who need it, some form of the big Mac Pro will remain in the lineup.

Well we have two days to find out, but my email from Apple on this even literally claims "Peek Performance" so it's likely a pro or two mac is being introduced that isn't a macbook pro.

Just to keep things tidy, I'd like to have my SSD's mounted internally on PCI blades.

Re: New Desktop Mac? Stay tuned 3/8
Well, PCI slots might be optimistic, but a “peek” at a new MacMini Pro, or “Studio Mac” seems possible for tomorrow now.

In that case, PCI slots and spinner-drive bays would be optimistic. Hmm... me want some beef!

Plus, PCIe is still faster than external enclosures, like 2800MB/s VS 7,000MB/s.monkey man wrote: ↑Sun Mar 06, 2022 10:26 pmThat's what I'm hoping for Mike.mikehalloran wrote: ↑Sun Mar 06, 2022 8:14 pm Otherwise, there’s no reason a box of that size can’t hold 4 PCIe slots.

No slots — no surprises there. That old picture was an artist's mock up from 2020—may have been a surprise to Cult of Mac but few others.
Some of the GPU performance stats were cherrypicked vs the Mac Pro (single GPU with no Afterburner) so if you're not an AV pro at a film or animation studio, the $50K 7.1 still outperforms this where it counts in MAYA rendering but how many of us have that need?
Otherwise, it has everything I'm looking for — and hope the next iMac Pro has as well. Yea, I want one or something like it. If pricing was mentioned, I didn't hear it.
Tim Cook did say at the end that a new Mac Pro was coming.
The big difference between TB3 and TB4 is that you can attach multiple TB3 peripherals to a TB4 port. It's not faster.

The M1 ultra is awesome, but budget factors in. $1999 or $3999

New Desktop Mac? Stay tuned 3/8
I watched the presentation, the new Mac Studio computers look very impressive but again I didn’t see a mention of internal storage, and of course no PCI slots. I wonder when the new Mac Pro will be announced?
The reason I need a slot is for my UAD OCTO eight processor PCI card. Perhaps I’ll rethink my priorities and sell that thing.
