first timer

Post by crashedthecar »

Just downloaded the demo yesterday. My head hurts from reading the user guide but it all seems to be clicking.

Which one of you jokers did the groove 3 videos? They are brilliant, you should be awarded a medal.

One question. Do you guys normally place vsti s in the sequence or the v rack? What are the pluses and minuses? I read in the user guide about dp pre rendering vsti s in the sequence so to conserve cpu resources. Do do you put say Abbey road drums in the sequence and not a v rack? Or other way round?

My background is ableton, reaper and studio one. But dp is very much growing on me.

Cheers

The main advantage for me of putting it in a vrack is that you can then have multiple sequences (chunks) in the same file and the vsti will be available in each of them rather than loading a new instance every time you change chunks.

Hi bdr yeah that makes sense to me.

I think I'm getting my head around dp. I have 28 days left on the demo so plenty time to decide whether I jump ship.

At the moment I'm having trouble adjusting velocities in the MIDI editor.other than that this program effin rocks.

I mean I can change a velocity of a MIDI note but I'm finding it hard and fiddly to get the cursor on the right spot to drag it up or down.

Thanks in advance for any tips

The arrow cursor will visibly change to a hand when you are over the velocity cc indicator and you can then drag it. It is something I wish could be made a bit bigger both for visibility and for functionality. You can also just click-drag the mouse over it to select it...shortcut into the velocity adjustment drop-down menu...and adjust it in a variety of ways from there.

Brian Ralston

For video/film work, I like putting VIs in chunks. For songs, I prefer to put VIs in the mixer, so I can automate levels/sends/plugins without running another layer of Aux busses.

Try the reshaping tools with velocities. very cool:

In the Graphic Editor, select the notes in question (works best if you select a bunch in a row, i.e. a whole melody line.)

Now hold down the R key and your cursor changes to a wavy line. Drag across the selected velocities either above or below the current value, and you'll see they change to the value where you dragged across. Insanely fast and very intuitive.

When you get deeper into it you can see you can select all kinds of preset curves to do this with. Default behavior is freehand, in other words, exactly how you drag, that's what the velocities will change into.

Works of course also with continuous controllers and many other kinds of data.

The R word is the F word around here. No joke! It's blocked and will stay that way. I won't get into it as it's really irrelevant anyway.

As for other blocked stuff: Politics, religion, and racy pictures. The board owner likes to keep it focused (we do have an o/t area if you get totally bored- butt still, no politics, religion, nudes, semi-nudes, suggestive stuff, etc.

Looks like you're other stuff got answered. Have fun. Ask questions. Mind the trolls!

All good. Was surprised is all. Was it about the themes?
Nope I don't need to know.
Any who thanks for the help.
I think I know enough now to lay something down.
Look forward to trying out that room b plugin

I'm sure I'll have more questions later.
Dp has been pretty stable btw. Turning off Windows indexing has made a difference

And I'll keep the semi nudes down to a bare minimum.

Indexing on the Mac is also a problem for some. Personally, I don't see any impact on performance. As for the R word, if you really, really, really, want to know how it all got started, look here. You can also do a search (I suggest limiting it to tiles with the R word) which the forum will do, but will still abbreviate the word with the R........ thingy. You don't have to in the search.

It's complex, and as you can see, this community has a long memory. Just don't ask what it means when we say: MOTU must face!  :unicorn:

You can search for that one too. Or not...

Hey, welcome CTC. This place is not like any other on the Internet, (and that's a good thing). Things to really learn here. Go ahead, bite the bullet and get DP, you won't regret it, but remember, you need to learn it, and it won't be quick. Been using DP on a variety of Macs for about 8 years, and I still learn something nearly every day. Remember though, Do not play dumb!
