Patch Names in Windows

Post by mythicwave »

Not having used Windows much for music before, I'm at a loss on how to publish my patch names to DP8. For example, I have a Yamaha Motif rack that I want to be able to select patches from by name in the Tracks window. How do I go about publishing these names?

Thanks,

Brian

Open the Bundles window and click MIDI Devices. Then click Add and it will create a 'new external device'. Select the new device, click Edit and then you can name it and select the manufacturer and device for patch names, channels, etc. Don't forget to click the I/O boxes for the MIDI interface.

Thanks. Right, this is on Mac also. I've been using software instruments so long I forgot about it. I'd been thinking I had to edit .midname files.

The Mac is slightly different in that it will automatically create the bundles based on the AMS configuration. There's no equivalent to coreMIDI in Windows.

NazRat, that was a great help for me too (Windows 7, Kurzweil K2000)!

However, I have three more related questions:
Is it possible in the DAW to setup names for my K2000 instruments (1 to 100) like "Stage Piano" etc? I need that to easyser set up or change the instrument in track/piano roll view. That was possible in old DAW:s like Voyetra Digital Orchestrator which also provided an patch editor.

The other is how can I adress an K2000 instrument (suppose the third one, a piano)? E.g. I setup track 1 to Chanell 2. Is that LSB=3 I must choose in my example?

One issue is that I created K2000 as a new external devices in Bundles. But Digital Performer shows K2000 as: "(not active)". What's wrong?

Thank you!

Do you physically have more than one K2000 or are you trying to create multiple devices based on patch names of one K2000? If you have more than one K2000, then you create the bundle definition and then you can alt-click the name in the bundles window to rename it to what you want. Just make sure you select the MIDI I/O correctly.

If you're trying to make multiple devices out of one K2000 - I don't know why you would do that. You would create different tracks for each patch and name that track Piano, Bass, etc. If you have multiple output channels defined for the device in bundles, then you can select that output, i.e. K2000-1, K2000-2. The Event List is by MIDI track so it will be separate for each. OTT - not sure what you're after.

On the 'not active' issue - that usually means the track doesn't have valid I/O assignments. At least I think that's what you're describing.

Just a correction. I remade the "new device" (only one). When I try to chose in Tracks, Output, it is shown in the list as K2000 (missing) and inside K2000-1 (missing) too.
However, I can see now the patch names and choose them in the column "Default Patch" (e.g. "Piano/S.String" but not in "Patch".
Probably the my USB to MIDI adapter is not recognised by DP. I DP I can see "USB to MIDI Addapter (Emulated". I could not find a place in the DP menus to check/setup this addapter.

When the device shows as missing it means that you don't have the MIDI I/O selected in bundles. The MIDI ports are listed across the top of the bundles window. You need to click on the box that intersects the device with the MIDI port for I and O.

After testing, a new question rised :-(
I could setup Kurzweil K2000 in Bundles. It is now possible to play.
I try to set up a Fretles in "Track 2" (Output K2000-2 chosen). In the list Default Patch (or simply Patch) I see on Bank 0 at No 26: "No Frets".
The problem is that in K2000 the Bank 0 No 20 is another instrument, "Synth Caliope".
So the patch list seems not be correct in DP. I tried to find some text (xml) file in DP directory having to do with K2000 in order to manually change the instrument names associated to patche number. But unsuccessful.

Is it a way to get a new "Bundle" containing correct names?

Naturaly it is possible to have a print of the patche's Numbers and Names. But not so fun.

Thanks again for advices.

The patch names supplied with DP should be the factory default for the device. If you have or someone else has changed them, then you need to edit the .midnam file of the device to reflect those changes. Unfortunately Fedex picked up my laptop for repair this morning and I don't remember where the .midnam files are on the PC - best guess is \ProgramData\MOTU - some where in there.

You could also reset the K2000 to the factory defaults, but you might want to find a Kurzweil forum somewhere for guidance. If you've heavily modified the unit's programming, you will most likely lose all your modifications.

Thanks!
On PC, no .midnam at all, just .exe .dll some .xml (not seems to be related to keyboards). No DATA directory either.
Maybe I should try a Windows Grep over all MOTU files in my computer.

However, windows grep found a mention here:

C:\Program Files\MOTU\Digital Performer 8.0\Resources\English.lproj\StringRsrc.xml
00701: <TEXT name="44">Kurzweil K2000 Programs</TEXT>

Now is to find where this "44" is in other resource files.

After that I searched in all files after a patch name e.g. "Gargantuan" existing in DP list of patches. No results at all. :(

As for K2000 I made a lot of resets. Seems that my K2000 version don't either match the printed k2000 manual.

There are .midnam files on the PC . The one you are looking for is in C:\ProgramData\MOTU\Digital Performer\MIDI Devices\MOTU\Kurzweil. On the PC, ProgramData is normally a hidden folder, so you'd have to unhide it in the Folders Options - View tab. I don't believe that Windows search shows hidden files or folders.

PS - Thank my wife for unknowingly allowing me to install DP on her laptop.

I was neither aware about the directory structure of MOTU i.e. it the files are located in ProgramData not in Program as I expected me.

Thank you!

One other thing - if you edit the patch list, keep a copy of it somewhere else like in My Documents. With DP8 on the Mac, the installer has been overwriting .midnam files when installing updates. It may not be the same on the PC, but there's no reason to take the chance. This way if it is overwritten all you have to do is copy it back to the ProgramData location rather that redo the edits.
