DP7 Registration Step Failure

Post by bweston »

Owner of DP since ver 3. I'm trying to install my DP 7 on new Mac Pro (I've previously installed it on my macbook pro, and a different Mac Pro). When launching DP after the install is done, I get the Registration Dialog, type in my Name and Serial Number, as usual. Then I listen to the installer disc spin for a while, and then I get the same Registration Dialog again. And again. And again.

Any thoughts?

One peculiarity: I initially installed 7.0 and then 7.24; ran 7.24 and the registration occurred normally. Then I realized that I needed to backtrack to 7.12, since 7.24 does not support the DAE (and I don't have the 7.22 installer, which is the last with DAE support, I think). It's after installing and launching 7.12 that the Registration is now failing every time. I tried uninstalling all versions, and then installing 7.0, 7.01, 7.02, 7.12. And launching 7.12.

I've never had this registration dialog problem before.

If you are on 10.7 Lion, you need 7.24 to authorize. Nothing earlier will work.

If that is not the issue, you need to delete old authorization files. This tells you how - although it claims to be 10.5 specific, it happens in 10.6 and 10.7. There is a link for earlier OS in the note.

Was finally able to pass the registration after a "hail mary" of setting all the computer's prefs to read and write for everyone and anyone.

Unfortunately, that Hail Mary may not be so full of grace. I did that once to "cure" a system problem with Finale and royally screwed up my system so badly that I had to completely reinstall everything from scratch. That was about 2 years ago as I recall and it has worked great since.

If that's all it took to fix permissions (blanket - everyone can do what they want to the system folder and such) then why would there be permissions in the first place.

Do what you will, but for my money I'd get a new, large hard drive and start over NOW, before you find out too late that all permissions are not created equal.

Just sayin...

Oh, and DO NOT migrate your system! :!: It only copies the errant permissions. Clean install your OS and install your apps from the original discs or DMG files. You can copy files, but not apps and not OS (library, etc) files and folders.

That link I posted was to fix a permissions issue peculiar to DP. Did you try it and it didn't work?

I agree that you may have opened a can of worms that may bite you later. I would follow the advice and build a new drive from scratch.

I had problems with the DP 7.24 registration loop with a new Mac Mini (without internal DVD). After numerous tries using remote access to DVD's on other machines, the only thing that worked was using a USB tethered DVD drive attached to the Mac Mini. Hopefully this post will help someone, since MOTU takes so freaking long to respond to questions ..... but I'm not bitter!

Well, that is the way you are supposed to do it.

There are other ways that work using Target Mode but you sometimes have to get creative.
