Well yeah, but it's actually $400 if you already own a UAD-1 and if you want, you can transfer all of your existing authorizations to the new card.
At least now there's a path to PCIe machines and I'm not out all that money I spent on plugs.

Not really - they give you a $100 coupon for buying new plugs, not a $100 discount off the new card. If you own all the plugs already, you don't get anything except $100 off a yet-to-be-announced future plug.

As crossgrade/upgrade packages go, this one is about the lamest I've seen - most companies either give you a decent discount for being a loyal customer, or if they do charge you full price for the new stuff (i.e. buying a new Mac), you at least get a new machine that is faster and better - not the same old processor in a new wrapper.....of course, maybe it's Apple's fault for not offering a couple of "legacy" PCI slots in the new Macs.

It is definitely not Apple's fault. Apple has excelled at keeping their machines on the cutting edge. UAD-1 was released 5 years ago...

And five years is not a bad run.....except I bought my UAD-1 UltraPak just six months ago so I'm gona have to bite the $500 bullet.

At least now I know I can buy a new Mac and have my UA plugs.

I just hope the new card doesn't have the efficiency problems that the original has with the newer PCI chip (AMD?).

Yes, but not until xmas at the earliest. UA, not known for timely deliveries, says it will ship Q3. I'm thinking we'll know if they're ready and stable early next year. ...just in time for the dual quad Macs

some people just have to complain about everything. What do expect them to do? Offer you a free upgrade? I suppose you expect all the hard drive companies to offer you a free upgrade everytime a new standard (sata, firewire 800, etc.) comes out...sheesh.

I do not ever expect free upgrades. That would not make any sense, and would put an end to future r&d, which would screw all of us.

I am a little irk'd that UA made no mention of the fact that they were working on a PCIe card. They just suggested that folks go out and buy an expander chassis, and kept on pushing their almost obsolete cards. Unless they just now decided to make the new card and are letting us know from the get go...........

I do however think it would be more than fair for them to give the more recent buyers of the old PCI card a cheaper upgrade.

If I bought a Seagate 60GB IDE Hard Drive in 2001 for $200, I sure as hell wouldn't want to pay $200 in 2006 for a 60GB SATA Hard Drive when all of Seagate's competitors are giving me 350GB for that much money.

Looks like it's Duende for me, unless UAD gets their act together.

Exactly my point - not getting a discount is fine with most people if you are getting something better - i.e. paying $200 now for a 300GB SATA drive even though you paid $200 2 years ago for a 120GB ATA. No, you will not get a disount on the upgrade from Seagate, but you are getting a better, bigger drive. With this UA proposition, you are basically shelling out another $500 for the same card you already have.

Interesting...

I called and talked the our friends at UAudio right when the PCIe macs were shipping. They told me that they were going to offer a replacement deal for "basically what it cist us to build the card..." which I thought was FAIR. Seeing how I have 2 cards and all the plugs that are in the Ulttra Pak, this is pretty crappy. I'll have to shell another grand to keep what I already OWN???!!!!

This new deal really, really sucks.

Anyone from UAudio care to respond?
