Ok. I've read through the manual a billion times trying to figure this out, and I still don't see the answer I'm looking for...
I used to use PT. When recording MIDI, I would set up a 16 bar loop and work out a bass line (or whatever) as MIDI. The loop would cycle through to the beginning and automatically erase the old mid as the new MIDI was laid down. I would do this until I had the groove I wanted.
In DP, I cycle through to the beginning and it pops out of record. If I do it as an overdub, it just layers the MIDI ontop of the last pass...I've tried setting up a take but I don't think I'm doing that correctly. It seems that I would need to tell DP to move to the next take, but when I'm sitting at my keys, that woudl break the flow of my playing.
Can anyone help?

You have to chose New Take from Take column menu.
It sounds like you're asking for the MIDI equivalent of Polar.
A work-around would be to just keep recording the same groove on a track until you have what you want. Then copy/paste/whatever.
