With the loss of Lou Harrison due to natural causes, I have to rethink who I would pick, but Philip Glass' maturity by now (as especially evidenced in the world premiere of the opera "Appomatox") certainly puts him in the running, alongside Tan Dun (China's most famous composer) and Osvaldo Golijov (composer of the hybrid jazz/tango/classical/flamenco opera "Ainadamar").
