Well, I'm not Dave Polich, nor could I ever hope to be as talented, but this is why I do it, waitsongs:waitsongs wrote:I never thought about compressing previous versions of DP. Can you please explain what you mean by this and how one does it properly? Thanks.David Polich wrote:In fact, I forgot I still need to compress 7.21...will do that later today.
It's often handy to have an earlier copy of DP on hand for quick-and-dirty substitution. It could be that a troublesome project may load from said copy. Even your current version, if zipped as well, could prove handy should the app become corrupted somehow. It's conceivable that any number of reasons to revert to a previous version exist when you think about it.
Now, the first and most obvious benefit of this approach is that the drama of installing is avoided altogether.
Secondly, as I mentioned in my last post, accidental opening of an older version of DP cannot occur as long as all copies except for the one you're using are compressed. This inadvertent running of older versions most often manifests as a result of projects' being opened/double-clicked when they happen to be "linked" as such; the "Get Info" window in the Finder specifies which app will open a given file. The fact that it remembers actual version numbers is why, should the specified version (we're talking older ones here) be available, it'll be opened.
Oh, and you asked about compression: We're simply talking about "zipping" the older/previous versions of DP; I keep them in a folder in the MOTU DP folder. FWIW, I just use the Finder's File menu option, the one immediately below the "Get Info" one, funnily enough. Click a file or folder, open the menu and it'll say, "Compress X" where X is what you selected. You probably know all this but were thrown by the ambiguity of the term "compress/ion" as we're musicians. Hang on... doesn't that mean we're easily confused by a plethora of terms? Yum... terms... are they sweet?
Hope this helps.
