I never thought about compressing previous versions of DP. Can you please explain what you mean by this and how one does it properly? Thanks.
Well, I'm not Dave Polich, nor could I ever hope to be as talented, but this is why I do it, waitsongs:

It's often handy to have an earlier copy of DP on hand for quick-and-dirty substitution. It could be that a troublesome project may load from said copy. Even your current version, if zipped as well, could prove handy should the app become corrupted somehow. It's conceivable that any number of reasons to revert to a previous version exist when you think about it.

Now, the first and most obvious benefit of this approach is that the drama of installing is avoided altogether.

Secondly, as I mentioned in my last post, accidental opening of an older version of DP cannot occur as long as all copies except for the one you're using are compressed. This inadvertent running of older versions most often manifests as a result of projects' being opened/double-clicked when they happen to be "linked" as such; the "Get Info" window in the Finder specifies which app will open a given file. The fact that it remembers actual version numbers is why, should the specified version (we're talking older ones here) be available, it'll be opened.

Oh, and you asked about compression: We're simply talking about "zipping" the older/previous versions of DP; I keep them in a folder in the MOTU DP folder. FWIW, I just use the Finder's File menu option, the one immediately below the "Get Info" one, funnily enough. Click a file or folder, open the menu and it'll say, "Compress X" where X is what you selected. You probably know all this but were thrown by the ambiguity of the term "compress/ion" as we're musicians. Hang on... doesn't that mean we're easily confused by a plethora of terms? Yum... terms... are they sweet?

Hope this helps.

Thanks Monkey Man. I appreciate the thorough answer, since my mind is in a fairly constant state of confusion... :?

I figured compressing the file meant zipping it, but I didn't know if there might be version specific preferences or other things that might be hanging around the system folder and causing trouble if you didn't zip in a certain way. I'm glad to know it's as easy as you say.

I've always worked around the multiple version problem by opening DP from the latest version's alias (in the dock), then choosing the file I want to work on from the menu that pops up after DP goes through all its general launch procedures. It's an additional step, but it seems a little cleaner keeping the DP launch separate from the specific file opening procedure. Regardless of how I open DP though, it sounds like a smart plan to zip all my old versions so they're out of the way and not a potential source of error.

BTW, I hope you've achieved your ProVerb goals... I can't grasp everything you're doing, but I'm impressed by your tenacity!

Ha! Firstly, don't feel bad; mine's also in a fairly constant state of confusion.

Glad you're impressed by my Tin-Ass-City, mate. You should see me in my new vinyl tights...

 Are we in for a new MM avatar?

To hi-jack this thread even further... the only vinyl tights I wanna see these days are on Olivia Wilde in Tron!

Can't wait to see it one day; big fan of the original.

I had a tradition of renewing the avatar monthly for several years. Unfortunately energy challenges have seen my sticking with this one that marked my return after a lengthy hiatus. I've felt pressure from deep within to replace it for a while now, but I keep getting knocked on my a$$ and when this happens, the current one seems to fit somehow. I'll see what I can do though. No promises. Thank you for the "quickie", waitsongs.

Folks, there's nothing to see here. Just a club member chatting with the cleaner.

On topic:
I'm amazed that the mixer channel list still expands whenever I change layout presets or screensets; it's always one of the first things I check when new versions of DP appear. Could it be that we've not mentioned this often enough or indeed that nobody's sent this in as a request? I know I've meant to bring this up many, many times and have only managed to discuss it twice (from memory). I'm curious as to how this behaviour affects others and whether or not there are any workarounds.

The only thing I've been doing to minimise time spent selectively closing folders in said pane is trying my best to keep the mixer window open behind the editing or TO focus.

Dearest MOTU: It would be logical and wonderful if folders not containing currently-displayed mixer channels automatically closed in the side pane. This would allow much quicker de/activation of channels relevant to a given project/stage of production through a much-reduced list length. Further, it would be more in keeping with the whole idea of folders anyway. How absurd would it be if every time we changed screenset presets or reopened the TO, all folders were expanded? Such is my frustration with the mixer.

Don't want to raise a thread that's been discussed in a lot of detail, but I just went to 7.22 from 7.21 and my CD burning from DP had not been working got fixed.

(The problem was that it would do everything without complaint, it created a CD file with breaks in the wrong places and then report errors in the burning. The CD track markers all appeared in the right place tho)

Just went away with 7.22.

I also had upgraded in between to 10.6.6 and this CD problem was was happening with that (don't know if existed with 10.6.5 tho..)

The message seems is that as always (for me): If things are not working then updates might help. And in this case definitely.

The converse (my view)- if things ARE working, then be skeptical of updates ... It could mean more work!
