For those (like James) who aren't familiar with the abbreviation OMD, it stands for Orchestral Manouevres in the Dark (yes, using the British spelling). Such a mouthful, that most people gave up early on and just went with the initials. A few other bands ended up in that boat as well.

They are probably best known for "We Love You", "So in Love", "If You Leave", "Enola Gay", and "Electricity", in terms of their 1980's output.

Their musical sound was somewhat spartan and subdued, which allowed for the vocals to take on an almost operatic quality. As a result, they kind of have a signature sound that means they don't often get mistaken for other synth-pop bands of the era.
