The front panel of the Motu828es turns off, but the card continues to function!

Post by onlymarcomotu »

A few days ago my Motu828es started having problems with the front panel. Before, it would get stuck after a few minutes and stay on in the same position as that moment. Today, everything even turned off, the card seems off, but it continues to work correctly. A few days ago I installed the new driver update, but I don't think a driver can create problems with the panel.

I have a Macbook Pro 16' M1 Pro. Thunderbolt connection.
From a software point of view, I can continue to work without any problems, but the panel.... is currently off.

After the restart, everything seems to work properly, then after a few minutes, the panel either freezes or turns off.

The motu is connected to a Furman M-10X, which is connected to a UPS.

Can anyone help me? Any ideas?

Thanks to everyone

Could it be power supply related? If so, MOTU has (or at least used to have) power supplies available for $30.00.

Hope you can get it sorted. OTOH, how often do you really need look at the display? I rarely look at mine.

Hi, thanks for your quick reply. Yes...in fact the display is not very important, I also use it very rarely. But seeing the panel completely off does not please me.

I have currently reinstalled the old version of the driver (Version: 95330) and at the moment the panel is no longer blocked, but I have to wait again (it's been a short time). Maybe I solved it with a driver downgrade.

I will update my message to possibly help other users with the same (strange) problem.

Thanks again from Italy

UPDATE: The issue is not the driver. The problem with the panel freezing occurs independently.

If it is in any way motion sensitive, it could be a cable inside it that isn't fully plugged in.

Failing that, it sounds like the controller CPU that manages the display and buttons is crashing. It could be something wrong with the CPU or something in the power supply that is causing it to supply dirty DC power to that board.

I also saw the front panel on my old 828 MK3 fail the first couple of times I powered it up after a decade in storage, apparently because the rechargeable lithium battery that had drained. After a few power cycles, the battery got charged enough for it to work, and it has worked ever since. So your problem might be a defective rechargeable lithium battery that isn't properly acting as a buffer on power on the way to that CPU, assuming they used a similar design in the 828es, which seems kind of likely.

If it is still under warranty, contact MOTU, because this seems likely to be a hardware failure.

If is out of warranty, I'd probably try changing out the battery first, and if that doesn't help, borrow an oscilloscope and check to see if the power supply to the main board looks clean, and recap as needed.
