Any Way to Stop my Mac from Asking to Migrate to Sequoia?—SOLVED!

Post by Rick Cornish »

The ominous red bubble is getting annoying and I don't want to brick my system by inadvertently migrating to Sequoia before I'm ready.

I have automatic updates turned off, though I wouldn't mind having them for security updates to Sonoma and app updates.

I poked around online and found a few old posts with Terminal commands that I'm hesitant to try (because they're old, and because it's Terminal).

Is there any reasonable way to turn off or hide these system upgrade notices?

Hahaha! Same here... there's no way I'm gong to Sequoia anytime soon. And I agree... it's getting annoying. I wish Apple would build in some ability to turn off reminders about OS updates. :(

And be careful with your Kontakt instrument updates now, too. You could be forced to move to K8.

Yeah... that Kontakt Factory Library 2 update was pretty *stealth*. From what I've gathered many of the instruments will in fact open in Kontakt 7, but not all of them. I'm in the midst of a Time Machine backup before I install Kontakt 8. This is taking a LONG time because I updated my Sample Tank 4 MAX library last night... not to mention while I had time, I had an old SFX library that was originally on CD that I copied to a drive and I was cleaning up the heads and tails. It was done fairly sloppily, with 5 or 6 seconds or more of nothing after the sound effect was over. Also, probably because it was an old library that was on CDs, they had a half second or more of silence at the start of the sound. I remember you had to do that with CDs years ago.

I just found this:

https://osxdaily.com/2024/02/13/how-to- ... tions-mac/

I haven't looked at it closely yet, but it may work for Sequoia. It involves a Terminal command.

That's one I've seen mentioned. The command seems straightforward enough, still… I always get nervous about getting "under the hood."

I tried the terminal command on my Air that is now on Sonoma. So far nothing has blown up. No flying monkeys.

I won't be installing Sequoia for a while given Apple's poor recent record on QA, and then only if there is a clear advantage.

So did it work? Are you not getting nagged about updating to Sequoia?

So far seems to work. I restarted and was not notified about Sequoia.

This is great news. I might have to work up the courage to try it.

defaults write com.apple.SoftwareUpdate MajorOSUserNotificationDate -date "2025-02-07 23:22:47 +0000"
That command does not work for me. Oh well.

I was trying to figure out why I don't have this issue and it's likely because I have Do Not Disturb on 24/7 mode, on both the Air and Studio.

OK, I tried the Terminal command. After a restart, the red bubble update reminder went away until I clicked on System Settings->General->Software Update. The Sequoia reminder was briefly gone… until the little spinner appeared when it started looking for updates and then it re-appeared.

These 'stop nagging about upgrade' Terminal Commands stopped being reliable when Mojave was released. My two 2012 MBPs have boot Volumes for Mojave and Catalina—both Mojave Volumes have the red reminder since Catalina is the last supported macOS on a 2012 without a hack. The Terminal Command for Mojave works for awhile but I now just ignore it.
