Multiple 828x waveform timing/alignment

Post by detroitdiesel »

Not sure if this should be in optimization/usage or troubleshooting.

When I record a few different mics on a source (kick drum for example) the wave forms are not precisely aligned.

To be clear, if I record all mics through the same interface they ARE aligned. But if I run through 828x #1 and 828x#2 and/or my alesis AI-3 they are NOT aligned. They aren’t off by much but still audible.

I am going to try different clock sources first to see if this solves the problem (internal, 828 etc) but I wondered if there was a setting in the audio driver prefs that would tighten this up.

Logic would dictate that I just run all drums through one interface except each interface is tied to different flavor preamps. 828#1 is the True precision 8, AI-3 is all my tube stuff and 828#2 is direct out from my Dynasonics desk (WAY musical EQs and sweet pres)

I’d like to access each flavor when cutting drums so proper alignment is key.

Maybe a external hardware clock that would whip them into shape?

Thanks in advance

DD

Hi,

You should have one reference source (word clock for example) for all audio interfaces to keep'em in sync.
If it not that big a deal..
(Not @my studio right now...)
Depending on how much problem you have with your timing alignment, try this:
1. Big difference - move the audio files by hand, keeping one file as your reference for all channels.
2. less of a difference - There is a plugin from motu called (something like) precision delay (??), that can be of use
3. Also check phase

Macmini M1 | Motu 828mk3 x 1 | 2 x Motu M64 & SSL XLogic Alpha-Link MADI AX | 2 x Motu MTP AV | OSX 12.6.x | DP 11.x | Mach5 3.x.x | 2xiLok | 2xUAD quad dsp card | Altiverb 7.x | SoundToys | Nomad factory | PSP | Arturia V-collection | Korg VI's |
and loads n' loads n' loads n' loads n' loads o' stuff.

Thanks bjornln, all units are running off one of the 828 unit clocks. I guess I’ll try internal as a different clock setting. Logic wanted me to set up an aggregate device. Perhaps DP would like that as well.

I never would have even noticed this (DP user since 2004) except I just started using the inputs from 828x #2 from the console AND pres from 828x#1 together on a full drum kit. No bueno.

Manual alignment is what I did for the song I recorded last Tuesday when I discovered this problem. I don’t want to rely on that though. Things should line up imho.

Thanks,
DD
