URGENT firewire drive help

Post by doodles »

hey guys

got 3 lacie firewire drives - 2*300 gig, and one 500 gig. they are used for sample storage, and over-night back-up of projects.

the 500 gig one has just crashed, giving me an error of "you have a drive with no volumes on that mac osx can read" (i'm on a dual 2.5 g5, tons of ram, os 10.3.6), so i choose the skip button (instead of initialize!), and the harddrive doesn't show up on the desktop - obviously. if i go to the apple disk utility, the drive is recognized, but the programme can't do anything about fixing it. tried repeaigin permissions, but none of the firewire drives have an OS installed on it, so not a lot i can do there...

i used to be fine in 0s9, but not too sure what to do here. i'm avoiding norton like the plague, so what do i do? also, for future stuff, is there another programme like norton that can defrag external drives of this size?

your help asap is much appreciated, as i'm in a cold sweat at the moment

I use Disk Warrior and Techtools. Disk Warrior is a life saver because it repairs and replaces your drive directories. I've had that same thing happen to me before and DW saved me.
Techtools will allow you to defrag the drives as well as perform other maintainence functions.

Good luck man.

Not sure why you are avoiding Norton - up to now it has worked fine for me. I had the same trouble with a LaCie Firewire drive - Mac OSX seemed to have trouble with them for a while. Norton helped recreate the volume and I got most of my stuff back.

I don't think you will be able to get the info back as you have not had Norton or another package saving info about your volumes. I now have two drives, a USB2 drive and a new Firewire drive which I keep up to date in tandem. That way I'm covered if firewire begins to play up again.

Tech Tool Pro will repair the directories as well. Also look at Drive 10 from micromat, both of these just saved 2 200 gig drives.

Norton has been known to corrupt audio bit tree files that's why most people doing digital audio and video avoid it.
I'm not sure if this is the case with the OSX version, but it surely was the case in the OS8&9 day's. I once lost 6 gigs of audio because of Norton. Disk Warrior repairs and replaces file directories and should help doodles. I had an identical problem that he's experiencing, and DW saved my life. ;)

Disc warrior will likely fix your drive.. Highly recommended. An essential tool. I have given up on Norton.

Hello:
The trick to norton is not to let it live on your drive. I never let it repair bad trees or creation dates or the like cuz it can screw things up. I have to say that not once have I been able to recover a crashed disc with norton but that may be because the drives were gonners and nothing may have helped. I switched to tech tools but have not yet had a critical recovery to do.

I bought this product (it's not very expensive) when all else failed including a trip to my local mac guru / authorized Apple Repair center. It brought my drive back four months after I had given up ever getting back my music.

I have to put in another vote for DiskWarrior. After I lost a cd wallet of backups when I moved and a HD crashed, It saved some drives for me that Norton's couldn't and 2-3 years of work. I love diskwarrior.

That reminds me that I should run it again soon.
