mastering project

Post by waddo »

I know there are a numbers of ways to master a song. I myself use T-racks stand-alone. I cannot say it is good or bad because it is the only thing I have used. hence this post.

My idea, which admittedly will probably fall flat on its face, is to post a 10 second snippet of a song with guitar vocals etc on my web site. Any one wishing to join the project can download the file, run it though your mastering system, email it to me (I cannot think of any other method) and I will post the results on my site with the technical details you provide.

I think this could be a good way to evaluate different options without expense. But, like I said, I am sure this will not take off.

Any way, here hoping.

What do you think?

Well, here's the deal... mastering is about 90% taste. Mastering is a completely subjective. So much can be done to change to sound of the mix it can go a million different directions and not any one way is "right." Just compare a few of your favorite records. They will sound very different. I have some projects mastered by big time mastering engineers and I don't like them much at all. Some are too boomy and others to bright, while others are to dark. It really just depends on what you are going for.

It could be interesting to see/hear how certain 'opinions' were acchieved, though.

Interesting idea. True, mastering is subjective ... but still, other ways, other ideas ...

BTW - I dont use T-Racks after performing detailed analysis with many other tools. Its good for QUICKLY adding warmth, maximizing levels, etc ... just not for me.

I'm no mastering engineer by any stretch of imagination, but I'll give it a try using the tools I have.

I fear no embarrassment.

You can send me a snippet at chris@imperialcogart.com.

As for the subjectivity of the exercise, I think that'll be the fun part.

I'm glad and surprised that a few of you have decided to join th fun (cough cough).

I have added a 1 minute clip to my web site, link below. for you convenience I have added my email address to the page.

I have used a section from a DP recording (sory I don't have many to choose from) which contains some dynamics and should be suitable for a good test. but I don't know much so i could be wrong!

If I can get at least 2 masters especially from different software/hardware then I will add this to the studio page of my web site permentantly. (It's been empty until now!) For it to be useful to other people please tell me:

1. what you used for the mastering
2. if possible the settings (although this may be too much trouble, i'm not sure). If it was based on a preset then jst the name of the prest could be ok.
3. Anything you think is important information.

As I said I used T-racks for mine and the result I got can be heard in the main music page. I will add just the snippet master when I get files from other people.

Cheers and I think this could be pretty interesting!

Check out the Izotope Ozone at

http://www.izotope.com/

It is one of the best tools for mastering, and pdf-documents on mastering.

30 people have donwloaded the clip but so far no one has sent me a mastered version. I would love to get at least two or three!

Since it's still the weekend I am hoping some of you will do it!

Hi

just eamil them to me at the address on the samew page as the clip.

I believe there is a 5mb limit so you can either send it as an mp3 (which one person already did) or try

tokyo@waddo.net

I have no idea if there is a size limit here but I suspect not.

Thanks
