Actually Sonar 4 in XP is amazing and rock solid. I can run a bunch of other apps at the same time as tracking in Sonar, i.e., Atomix, Reason, Project 5, DXis, VSTi, even WMP and Sonar can record everything without a hitch. I wouldn't even think of trying to run so much at once on an Apple!

Me too. My main rig is a Dual 2.7 with DP4.52 and Tiger with numerous VIs. Since I have a powerful PC laptop (3 gHz) with XP, I bought a copy of Sonar 3.11 for composing on the road. Man, that rig is rock solid. I can simultaneously run Sonar with tons of VIs, MS Office, internet..., all without problems. Love DP, which is why I'm on a Mac, but PCs are great tools too. I'm even considering running Giga on the laptop (with a separate drive, of course)

Seems like things are turning to what I thought would indeed happen.

Then my First question would be:
I wonder what you're doing wrong?
I'm running DP 4.52, Reason, and various Vis while
tracking with no problems.
That's on a single processor mac.

Exactly. I routinely run DP and a whole mess of other apps simultaneously with no ill effects. Attempting to run a similar load on the XP boxen at work causes them to choke.

wow there is some serious mac fanboy ego defending going down!

Both platforms can run apps solidly... I don't see why there is such an anti windows bias here, why is it shocking a windows box can run something stable? They are both good platforms now. Can't wait to dual boot mac and windows os with my new Mactel :)

Please calm down everyone. As a software developer myself I wouldn't worry too much about this thing. Porting an app to the same OS on a different chip is not a very big job compared to a different OS on the same chip. Unless it is largely written in assembly language (which is by nature chip dependent) which is pretty unlikely these days. Basing OS X on a Unix underbelly was a smart move for Jobs for future flexibility regarding hardware changes..

Basically, Porting DP to Win XP on Intel for MOTU would be a hideously massive job (hence expensive) but another OS X on Intel really not so bad... ahhh.. relax..

Hey, I'm not trying to bash pc's, but the fact is I'm an IT guy during the day and work on pc's. I am constantly fixing and patching and messing with xp. I work for a large school district, and we have the art and music dept. running apple products. I first started out recording on a pc with Sonar3, and I had nothing but problems with it. I had done every tweak ever imagined, and it barely worked. I finally got fed up and switched to mac. Now I can concentrate on making music, not doing my day job in my studio at night. At our school district the users themselves take care of the macs. I have never even needed to touch them. If someone here can keep windows running an audio app fine, then more power to you. But in my experience, and working with windows as a technician, it is a very flawed and poorly designed OS. In the begining I was a windows fanboy, but after using a mac for a couple of days I realized how much better and reliable a mac is. I'll admit it, I'm now a mac fanboy, if that is what you want to call it. And if Jobs wants to put an intel chip in my mac, so be it. It's not a windows machine running mac, it's still a mac. Linux runs great on intel. Just as stable as OS X. The future is definitely looking great for us.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but didn't Performer already survive this once going to the PowerPC chip? I know it wasn't nearly as big back then, but still...

As a programmer as well, I'd like to reiterate what was said, given OSX is still the same, the API's are going to still be the same, along with the whole substructure of the system, therefore as long as DP was written higher level, to allow the compiler to make the best choices for the architecture, then recompiling it for OSXi is going to be MUCH easier. This is the beauty of unix. I've written apps that required no extra tuning to compile on Solaris, Linux, FreeBSD and OSX(which of course is FreeBSD based). Point being, I think this is a good thing.

While programming is actually my second task, chip design is my first, that's what I do for a living. Not only do I feel that the heat problem is an issue with the G5, the G5 is MUCH LOWER volume than the Intel chips. When IBM is focusing on the PS3, XBOX 360 and Nintendo Revolution, do you think they really care about losing Apple? No, they don't, because they want volume and Apple can't give them that. They are going to focus on what uses their fabs the most, because that's really what they do, and Apple just isn't going to push that envelope.

With Intel, it's different, as computers are one of their biggest marketshares. My only disappointment is I'd rather see an AMD in my mac, like an Opteron, as I find them superior.

But outside of that, I've written code personally, compiled it on my G5 with altivec, compiled it on my Opteron at work. I really feel the x86 architecture feels faster to me, and I look forward to the day of having 4 processors in my Powermac :)

Lastly, I DO NOT see why you'd have to replace your hardware??? MOTU hardware works now with both PCs and Macs, so including the cost of new audio interfaces and MIDI interfaces makes no sense. In addition, I DOUBT that the companies are going to charge you an arm and a leg for an update. Why? Because I can see this move by Jobs bringing in more people to Apple.

Just my 5 cents :)

I have seen Steve Job's keynote about this Intel introduction to Apple. It seems Apple has been secretly working on this for the last 5 years with OS X. THis means OS X is already compatible. Job's even showed his keynote using an Intel processor. I wonder how many times they had to reboot?
I saw a comparative test between the new Intel and AMD processor.
After 6 hours of test the Intel processor had already 4 reboots while the AMD just kept on running.
Why didn't Apple choose for AMD then. They run a lot better with audio applications.
I for one am not happy with this step towards Intel processors. Up till now I have only had to reboot my Apple PowerMacs in very rare occasions. With Intel we 'll have to do it every hour...
