Re: Economy of Means
So for me, I guess it's not so much about "one voice" as it is about "one synth." Ok, two. Well, two and that module over there. And the drum machine... One of the best pieces I have written was for amplified bassoon and tape (really used tape). I only had a TX7 to work with so ...

Re: Finale 2009 Ships
Glad to hear in is/was not a DP thing. I think I'll be making the jump to 2010 myself. What the heck, it's only money and time and we all know that is what our ilk has plenty of. Right?

Re: Economy of Means
Yes indeed. Less is more - a single oboe or clarinet has much more COLOR than when doubled with another instrument. The greats understood this. Listen to Beethoven's Sixth or any Mozart chamber piece if you have any doubts. I was talking to a composer a few weeks ago with massive work in games and T...

Re: Finale 2009 Ships
Or maybe they'll get real and put a beer bellied, cigarette smokin' composer at the keyboard? I think Tom Waits would class that joint down a bit - in a good way. LOL though I think "real" for Finale would be an old geezer (speaking for myself?) with a wild-eyed grimace as s/he faces an u...

Re: Finale 2009 Ships
Ooops. I'm only one year behind on this post! Really meant 2010-am using 09 now (with similar problems mentioned). Too much sun and wood filler I guess.

Re: Finale 2009 Ships
Been rebuilding a porch railing so have been OOT re 2009. (Porch looks good for a guitar player!). Thanks to MLC, Frodo (BTW, you guys should call each other :D) and others for the running comments on how the update is working. Very excited until Frodo began having problems. Was this score imported ...

Re: Favorite Orchestrators and Orchestrations
A good book that gave me many insights into orchestration, especially as it relates to a given composer's compositional approach, is "Style and Orchestration" by Gardner Read. It is out of print I believe but you could probably find a copy on ebay or Amazon or any good music library. Check...

Re: Going CRAZY with Reason 3.05. GRRRRRR!!
FM, I use Reason and DP a lot and have had a few of your problems but they were always related to how I linked Reason to DP. If I follow the instructions in the DP manual to the letter, I get good, consistent results. Also note, when you create a new instrument in Reason, it automatically adds a tra...

Re: Finale 2010 announced
There was something else, too, that I have to figure out. Occasionally, I'll discover a batch of empty staves appearing at the bottom of the score and I don't know what causes it because I've never been looking at the bottom of the score whenever it happens. I'm sure there's a preference somewhere ...

Re: Finale 2010 announced
Thanks for the info Frodo. I too agree that 09 seems to be the best of the most recent versions. As for the parts extraction, I have similar problems. Usually end up making at least 2 scores-one for the conductor/master score and one for parts extraction. Finale doesn't seem to deal with a2 and the ...

Re: Where does DP6 get this info?
I would recommend you check out the comments on Unisyn on that board before buying. It has a lot of problems and seems to be dead in the water as far as any kind of continued development is concerned.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Re: Finale 2010 announced
Any word from MLC, Frodo, and the rest with how 2010 is working? I have been a very long time user of Finale and have loved it for most of that time as it seemed I could figure out how to make it do about anything notation-wise. However, as the yearly versions keep coming out, I become more PO at Fi...

Re: Need Advice On Writing For Full Orchestra
+1 for Mussorsky Pictures and orch by Ravel. There is (used to be) a score with the piano below the orch that is very valuable for learning how Ravel rethought the piano. I used this when working with Kent Kennan (also a good book that is updated by Don Grantham). After you absorb the Ravel version,...

OS X 10.5.7 & DP 5.13 Solution?
After installing 10.5.7 I couldn't get certain older projects created in 5.13 to open. Many error messages about problems reading from the disk as well as disappearing mixer on some that would open before crashing. What was odd was that other projects created at the same time opened just fine. LSS-I...

Re: DP5.13: crossfade-crash ALWAYS!
The problem is we are getting a LOT of these threads where someone posts about a problem, sometimes with a rather alarming header (i.e. DP is TOTALLY BROKEN!!!!!, etc.), then they either find an answer on their own, or someone makes a suggestion, but then they disappear, sometimes without so much a...
