Same goes for "budget" gear. Some of it can be used with very repsectable results (and here's where I rant): remember those classic albums were recorded on gear that was every bit inferior to todays higher end budget gear. The trick is to use the gear towards it's strengths and minimize i...

I'm surprised no one's mentioned an EV 666r. Great midrange focus and definition. I end up picking the EV 666 90% of the time. Has less bottom octave, but what's there is very present and easy to work with. A pair of these for kick and bass amp seem to self-mix better than anything else I've tried....

They are about 200+ bucks now. MOTU Symphonic Instrument, or the Audio Encyclopedia + a few cases of beer? Choices, choices... Oh no, I should have thought before I started a run on it...... The Audio Cyclopedia won't ever be obsolete unless you spill the beer on it! I have to check on the '...

All bow now towards the Audio Cyclopedia. Go find one if you have any interest in OTB technical processes at all. The 80's update has the best discussion of console design issues I've found yet, while having less of the 'antiquated' knowledge.

I will use certain transformers for their tone altering qualities from time to time also; one more tool that I can't see a workstation emulating realistically any time soon. Why do you say that? What about convolution technology? I may be wrong, and realistically may be the wrong word choice. I've ...

I can't address the harmonic distortion components of a passive summing network, but think what you get primarily is the Johnson noise of the resistors down in the -127 to 130 dbm range, which is far lower than what you get when you add in some active electronics. This is true if using select film ...

Hi, I just went back and read all of the previous thread on this and wanted to throw in my own blurry impressions, which come from a slanted analog experience perspective. I will ramble far too much....sorry. 1) No matter what you do, it starts analog (discounting pure synths) and ends analog (speak...

I will say this too, manufacter's frustrate the hell out of me with their digital implementations! I've got some pieces with AES/EBU, some with SPDIF Optical, some with SPDIF Coax and even others with ADAT. Most of them not even supporting multiple ones. Trying to keep my signal digital once I've c...

inflammatory is what gets things done many times.... Yes, and other times it just pisses people off... board admins included. I can't imagine where else it would get talked about, though I'm sure plenty are tired of hearing the cries of the upset. I'd like to use my new G5 before it's obsolete, and...

My personal thought is that the higher rates translate more importantly to greater 'speed', and this is likely more significant to depth/soundstage/etc. than the increased frequency ceiling. There are analog noise gates that claim faster performance than 96K is capable of resolving! I like the thoug...

Posting my two cents worth of encouragement to MOTU to get this PCIe card out sooner rather than later. Hopefully their spies are paying attention. Contrary to popular belief, there are a ton of studios and transfer houses that need the 2408 for 24 tracks of ADAT / DA-88 transfer in one box, without...
