Sonoma 14.4

Just got this from Universal Audio...

There have been reports of compatibility issues impacting plug‑ins from various manufacturers that are safeguarded by PACE / iLok with Audio Units host DAWs such as Logic Pro on Apple silicon Macs.

That would apply to Falcon, right? (A very rudimentary question I know, but serious Luddite here.)

Yep. Pretty much the same warning that Liquid Sonics sent out a few days ago.

Macworld weighs in on this. Apparently not limited to just third party software?

I read that yesterday with great concern. Thankfully, I'm not having this issue. I keep a card reader, DVD burner, iLok 3, & BIAB drive connected to an Anker USB 3 hub and use it for sneakernet. Since I have an M2 Studio, I would expect that I'd be the prime target. Fortunately, everything connects just fine.

Whew!

I'm having no issues to speak of with hubs, (except that iLok every couple days needs to be unplugged and plugged in to be recognized by the computer, older than 14.4 issue), but what I got is a Kernal panic crash and restart when messing with a Kontakt instrument in Komplete Kontrol. Online other people have had the same issue.

Hopefully the fix happens soon, universal problems are more likely to be patched quickly so there's that.

You're still seeing this?

I tried a number of different hubs over the years to resolve this annoying issue. I settled on this one because I rarely had to unplug/replug — once a month or so on the average to my iMac Pro. Since I bought my Studio last October, it has not given me any grief in this regard.

The three charging ports on the end are useless for data but will charge an iPad. The other seven ports will barely charge an iPhone but do pass data.

Mine is the only peripheral I have connected to one of my Studio's USB-A ports. If it ever does cause the old disconnect, I will try it through a USB-A to USB-C adapter into one of my TB4 ports. I've already verified that those ports are backward compatible to USB 1.1 as is this Anker hub. Most mice and older MOTU MIDI boxes require USB 1.1 compatibility.

It's a recent occurence here, so some update to Sonoma. The 16 port hub has been quite reliable previously. I just to need to switch it to the OWC main TB hub. I've got what is a quite ridiculous amount of hubs hooked up here: OWC TB2 14 port hub, OWC TB4 14 port hub, with a 16 port 3.2 hub, a 4 port 1.1 hub and 6 port 3.2 hub as well. Most of them are full. My guess is connecting directly to the OWC hub or directly to the Mac Studio the iLoks will solve it. Right now it's connected via the 16 port USB hub to the TB4 hub, then to the Studio.

This one came from iZotope this morning, as well.

BTW: The most detailed info I've read on 14.4 issues with PACE iLok came from Oeksound:

"macOS Sonoma 14.4 bug (AU plug-ins)

"We are aware of a major plug-in scanning bug concerning PACE / iLok protected AU plug-ins on Apple's latest release of Sonoma, 14.4.

"So far, we have gathered that (at least) these requirements have to be met for the bug to appear:
macOS 14.4
  • Logic Pro or GarageBand (other DAW's don't seem to be affected)
  • iLok-protected Audio Units (AU) plug-ins
  • Running under Apple's ARM architecture
  • On M2 or M3 hardware (M1 does not seem to be affected)
"If you are on an M2 or an M3 machine and rely on AU plug-ins, we advise against updating your computer to macOS Sonoma 14.4 until the issue has been fixed.

"If you have updated to Sonoma 14.4 and are facing this issue, running your DAW with the Rosetta framework is the current workaround. You may need to rescan your plug-ins after switching to Rosetta."

So second Kernal Panic in 14.4 using Kontaktv 7 this time not in Komplete Kontrol, messing with the GUI. Panic then auto restart. Does not name Kontkat in the crash report, but it's obvious now. Sending in a tech support to NI..

It's a big club and growing.

Weird. I’m out of town so haven’t had enough time to check these various scenarios out, but it appears for reasons beyond my comprehension much of this is happening with the M2/M3 and Sonoma 14.4 combo. M1 systems (like mine) don’t seem to be suffering many of this issues.

That’s exactly what the post from Oeksound says.
