MachFive 3.2.1 on Big Sur (Mac0S 11.2.2)

Hello!

I've searched the forum (and the internet), and can't seem to find any info on this.

Is anyone successfully running MachFive 3.2.1 on Big Sur (Mac0S 11.2.2) or are you having issues?

For me MachFive is crashing everytime on startup, both standalone, and with the VST also crashing Ableton. I'm running the latest iLok licence manager.

------------------------------------------------------------

*EDIT* having looked through the forum, it seems MachFive is pretty much 6ft under. There hasn't been an update in 7 years, yet MOTU appear to be still be selling (or at least offering the upgrade). It would be good to have some transparency from M0TU, if they indeed have stopped developing it. What's the deal with UVI falcon? Is this similar to MachFive?

Anyhow, any help or insight would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Mat

Mach Five is not compatible with Big Sur. You can find this on the support pages at MOTU.com

UVI Falcon can be considered an upgrade to Mach Five with a more powerful synth engine, much of the functionality and the ability to use any of the current UVI libraries and effects. The downside is that it does not open some file types that MV3 can and never will. There is no upgrade on the UVI site but, if you email UVI support, you should receive a code that lets you upgrade to Falcon 2 for $189 and includes a $100 voucher that you can spend on additional UVI libraries. Scroll down to Contact Us (you should have a UVI account already when you registered the UVI add-ons to Mach 5)
https://www.uvi.net/falcon.html

Neither MV3 nor UVI Falcon are Big Sur compatible. Falcon will at some point, certainly. Whether MV3 becomes so is anybody's guess but, since it is now 64bit and works over Catalina (except for 32 bit library import), my guess is that it will be. We'll see…

I spent the $189 last year and was glad I did.

Amazing, I really appreciate the replies and info. The switch to Falcon looks promising. I’ll drop UVI an email and see how I get on.

Provided you don't rely heavily on M5's awesome "universal file compatibility", you'll be more-than-happy with Falcon.

Mike's suggestion is solid; support will hook you up with a discount and voucher unless it's changed its policy in the last 3 months.

So this info, from MOTU's website is just wrong then?

MachFive, Ethno Instrument, BPM, Electric Keys, and Symphonic Instrument (any version) are not yet compatible with macOS Big Sur or later.

As a workaround, the UVI Workstation instrument (free) can read the soundbank libraries from all of these products and can be installed on macOS Big Sur.

I have tried Workstation and so far cant get it to work.

There's another thread on this with solutions but I'm not finding it at the moment.

Are you running Intel or Apple Silicon? It makes a difference.

Just last night, I was able to open Ethno instruments and multis from the latest Falcon and could also do drag and drop, but it's not as obvious finding where you do this in Falcon. Granted I'm still on an Intel Mac, but it might be that Falcon can open these?

I ran Ethno 2 samples on a UVI Workstation. All outputs from the Workstation except the main drop me into mono, though. I'm really used to MachFive and its weirdnesses, so this is a pain.

M1 Mac mini. It seems to have UVIWorkstation run you need to open DP in Rosetta, otherwise you get an iLok error when trying to open .ufs soundbanks, which is all you can use on the free version. If you want to use Mach5 presets you need Falcon.

Amazingly iLok didnt know about this problem. MOTU and UVI both told me, but iLok is oblivious, just trying to blame the other guy. "Go talk to UVI, it's their fault". No, it isnt.

Gavin
P.S. To be clear, Workstation will run when not in Rosetta, but you cant open any soundbanks. That's when you get the iLok error.

The buzz I am hearing is that Pace is waiting for Avid to get it together with ProTools.

Although Antares has abandoned iLok, they're also using Avid as their excuse for their tools not being Monterey compatible. Yet they keep pestering me to spend money on upgrades. Yea, right… :shake:

That was most definitely an incredible selling point for Mach Five.
