Perhaps you're referring to a kora?
It is an African instrument. Check out the intro to this song. (Might as well listen until the horns come in, it's pretty funky). The instrument in the intro is the kora.

Basically a harp or lyre. I’d approximate it in a track with a somewhat muted harp or dulcimer but was less bright.
