Legacy Freebie ?

Greetings to all. I have a Korg N5EX which I am trying to get to talk to a Win XP PC with a locked, device specific version of UNISYN ?
Unisyn seems to be talking to the N5 - I am getting MIDI notes from the desktop keyboard playing sound on the N5. I am seeing changes on the N5 screen - from Global thru Combi to Performances. But the N5 is not sending data to the PC ??? (I am using an M-Audio 2x2 interface so assumed no drivers needed) Plus every now and then Unisyn crashes. Any thoughts much appreciated. (Buy the disc is not really an option.) Happy Thanksgiving !
