With APFS it pretty simple. You create a volume on the startup drive for each OS version, and they share the available space on the drive (compared to each OS having it's own dedicated partition). On my system they appear to be sharing applications as well, so there is not much effect on storage requirements.

It’s also fast and you can convert multiple files in different formats at once. Also so editing capabilities as well as custom output settings. Can’t praise it highly enough.

The downside: You no longer have access to the Repair Partition.

Yes, I mentioned Handbrake in a previous post on this thread. It's got quite an impressive feature set as well-- (especially for the price). It's been around for quite a while.

Yes. Handbrake is a wonderful utility. I've used it for years. However I don't think it does any of the things I mention in the OP, does it? ...those things again:

- Stripping and adding new audio to movies
- Exporting movies as .m4v. QT7 Pro's 'Export for Web' creates videos with AAC encoded audio is perfect for submitting as demos to clients and for YouTube etc.
- Basic edits. Such as adding a frame of black at the end of a movie, adding or deleting sections of movies etc to facilitate creating files for scoring.
- Creating multichannel QT documents. QT7 Pro allows you to assign 5.1 files etc. to any output of an I/O

If I knew precisely what 'Export for Web' did to movies Handbrake might be able cover that, but ideally I'm looking for something that does all the items in the list as QT7 Pro does.

It is frustrating that this old version of QT performs all these essential tasks and Apple acts like it doesn't exist.

I think the analogy of how Pages replaced Appleworks is in some ways similar. I felt like I could do almost anything with Appleworks, whereas Pages feels pretty dumb and clunky by comparison.

Complete conjecture here since I don't do much of that: I thought I'd also mention the open-source VLC Media Player, in case that would take care of some bit of these types of issues. It will do quite a few conversions in custom video/audio combinations, though not all (e.g. no QT, afaik).

Gah! Probably, but again, exactly what I’m trying to avoid. With iMovie and final cut etc. you need open the app, create and name a project, load the movie and render it out. With QuickTime 7 Pro you simply paste the audio into the movie and Save. ... Thank you though sometimes the easiest answers are the overlooked ones, but not this time

Reviving this thread to say, I'm an idiot. At least a partial one. My #1 lament in my OP re QT7 Pro, adding audio to movies, is indeed possible with QT Player

I accidentally dropped an audio file onto a Quicktime Player movie that was open today and, guess what. It dropped right in! You can't place audio later in a video like you can in QT7 Pro, but this knocks out the main reason I thought I needed QT7 Pro still to do.

Maybe my original post isn't clear, or maybe this wasn't always possible with Quicktime Player, but I'm a little surprised no one pointed me at this glaringly obvious solution on how to add audio to videos. I even started a thread on MacRumors on this topic and got more or less the same responses I got here.

There's still several things QT7 Pro does that can't be done easily without it, but this was the one that affected my workflow most often. ...drag and drop. who knew?
