Komplete Kontrol crashes MBP M3 in DP11.31

Post by gossamerjohn »

Hi I. I’ve searched this forum and don’t find this specific issue. I recently installed DP11.31 and things were generally great. However, today I tried to initiate Komplete Kontrol 3.21 as an instrument from within DP11. When the plugin loads and I try to select any sound the entire computer freezes (mouse cursor, etc) then the computer crashes and restarts.

I have no idea what is the cause since there is no report, the computer just reboots.

Plugins work fine when I select Kontakt as the instrument. And various other instruments work fine (Diva, Artiria instruments, etc.) Full Disk access is allowed for DP and all NI apps

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I’m on a MBP M3 Pro OS 14.4.1 DP11.31 and KK3.2
I’m using a NI controller. I’m running trough a UA Apollo Twin quad.

There is a bug in the communication layer of the current macOS. At the moment, you have two choices: Update to the macOS 14.5 beta 3 (available now) or wait till the general release. This is similar to the problems that users are having with Kontakt 7.

I stayed behind on 2.9.4 of Komplete Kontrol... actually it's 2.9.6 which I think NI made available when people where having some trouble with an early version of 3. I have an older Mk2 keyboard so there wasn't really anything compelling for me to go to version 3. Hanging back might have been a good decision. I don't think it's trivial to go back to an earlier version after version 3. You could always do a Time Machine backup so you have an APFS snapshot to restore from and run the 2.9.4 or 2.9.6 installer. If things are wonky afterward, restoring your boot drive from an APFS snapshot is pretty quick and painless. Any time I'm about to do something on my system that makes me nervous, I run a TM backup which will create an up-to-date APFS snapshot of my boot drive so I have something to fall back on easily in case things go wrong.

James, are you running an SSD for your TM backups? If you are using a spinner, does restoration take a long time?

Just curious.

I'm using the a Seagate External 8TB spinner and a WD External 8TB spinner but I think because I have a 2TB internal and there's still plenty of free space, that my APFS snapshot that I can restore my boot volume from is stored on the SSD, so restoring the boot volume only takes maybe 15 seconds and then I reboot and I'm in the exact state I was when ran the last Time Machine backup.

As of Ventura, APFS Snapshots can no longer roll back the macOS Volume but it can restore the Data Volume as it did before—as long as this is done within the 24 hour window.

That might apply if the APFS snapshot was made with a different version of macOS installed. I know for certain that I have restored my boot volume from an APFS snapshot so that everything was just as it was before (prefs, etc) so long as the version of macOS had not changed since I created the snapshot.

For example... if I have Sonoma 14.5 Public Beta 3 on my system and do a T M Backup and then install Sonoma 14.5 Public Beta 4... I cannot restore my boot volume from the snapshot made when I was running Beta 3. However, however I can restore my boot volume from a snapshot made with the same version OS that I'm currently running.

For anyone who needs it, I did find the page with the legacy installers for older versions of Komplete Kontrol:

Thank you for the info, Mike. I opened a ticket with both MOTU and NI. Admittedly I am not anything close to a software engineer or coder so this question might be out of ignorance: Is there any clue as to why an OS-wide bug would only manifest in DP (and not Logic or Luna?). Maybe people in other DAWs are having this same issue. It just seems odd that it only happens when I initiate KK in DP so I'm wondering if there is a setting I can "turn off" or change in DP to allow KK to work?

Anyway, I'm going to forego the beta OS for now in hopes it gets fixed in the newest OS update. I do still have Kontakt 6 installed so I might try that route. Or just use KK in Logic. Thanks!

Thanks for the link, James. I had gone looking for the legacy installers and found that page as well. Unfortunately it says 2.9.6 won't work with my current OS:
Komplete Kontrol 2.9.6 is compatible with macOS 11 to macOS 13
So I may just be down to waiting for an OS update as Mike indicated above.

Thanks again.

MacOS 14.5 beta 4 dropped yesterday. There was a minor Kontakt GUI window issue present in beta 3 that appears to be fixed.

I expect that the 14.5 general release will happen before the WWDC next month. Other than that, my crystal ball is blank.

Yeah... unfortunately for me, Beta 3 had finally fixed a long standing problem I was having with Pro Tools Studio and Console 1. Then Beta 4 broke it again. Fortunately, I don't really use Pro Tools. And so long as I have issues using Console 1 in it, it will stay that way I guess.
