MP3 Versions

Post by westla »

Hi all,
This is probably a silly questions, but what is the best way to make mp3 versions of final mixes? After I bounce the .wav, should I just then bounce an mp3 version in DP? Is there a better may to do this - another app?
Thanks!

Mac or Win? It makes a difference?

The most time consuming way is in DP. There are better, faster ways.

There are a number of ways on a Mac including QuickTime and iTunes/AppleMusic. You may have to change some settings—my daughter ran into this yesterday but her husband changed a preference in AppleMusic and she is now able to export mp3. (I should have asked what he did). Batch conversion of files is also possible.

If batch converting large numbers of files, there are 3rd party apps that are faster and more efficient. TwistedWave can convert abut 6 hours of various file types to mp3 under 5 minutes. There are other utilities as well.

Even if it’s batch conversion, iTunes works OK as long as you don’t need to do any other processing at the same time. Just drag a load of wave files into iTunes, select them and make MP3 versions. Pretty much the same thing you’d do in DSP-Quattro.

DP does a pretty good job and gives you quite a few options, including filtering frequencies below 10Hz. Which I always check. It might do some other steps as part of it's conversion. I can't remember if it still uses the LAME encoder behind the scenes or not.

I prefer normal stereo to joint stereo but I confess I've not A/B'ed them in a long time, and my ears probably couldn't tell the difference now.
